MEN, dont come into nursing

Nurses Men

Published

I ve worked in hospitals and nursing homes. It sucks. Dont let people here convince you on how great it is. If you are going back to school dont hang onto the mentality of "nursing is a great career there where always be jobs" that was 10 years ago when that was true. do research, there are no nursing jobs. People from overseas come here by the boat and take jobs. The wage is on the down trend, there are more then enough nurses to replace those ready to retire. Please if you are just getting into college pick a less stressful, good paying career choice. PPLEASE research on forums and here from nurses who are not happy with their career. coorprate has destroyed nursing. Dont listen to the few on here who say nursing is so wonderful, i promise you when they run out of paxil and adivan, which is fueling there happiness, they will no longer be posting on these boards on the issues of how great their jobs are.

Specializes in LTC,Hospice/palliative care,acute care.

The OP is also an ADN and as we know that is limiting his options. (not trying to start a flame war-I'm an LPN and I know how that limits me)

To OP, if you are not happy, please DO something about it. Everybody has a right to complain, but not a right to disrespect other people. If people come to US to practice nursing, who gave anybody the audacity to insult them?

As for people who love nursing, good for them. However, why must we conclude that they love their profession because they are addicts?

You have a right to your opinions, but DO NOT violate the rights of others.

Specializes in CEN, CFRN, PHRN, RCIS, EMT-P.

I doubt we will hear from the OP again, by now he surely left nursing for a more manly job in construction LOL

Specializes in Peds/outpatient FP,derm,allergy/private duty.

I love it that more men are choosing nursing as a career. Diversity makes for a healthier "whole", and that's a fact, not a Paxil-Ativan fueled delusion. smile.gif

Wow we have a bad day or something?

Mainly I think we can take your points that you make to not go into nursing and apply it to about any job out there and tell people you shouldn't go into it. you shouldn't go into construction because of this and that. Don't be a mechanic because of this and that.

Yes there is stress for us that work in health care, but EVERY job has there own unique stressers.

Health Care jobs are not in any unique position of having trouble fiding a job. Many other careers out there have people that have a degree in something and having a hard time getting a job.

Even talking about nurses coming here from over seas can be considered pointless when you look at many jobs that we use to have here in the U.S that are now being shipped OUT over seas.

The economy as a whole is not good and MANY jobs have wages on the down trend.

So I would like to know what suggestions you have people go for in college that have all kinds of oppertunities for employment, have wages sky rocketing, and is stress free.

As someone else here has said, perhaps nursing isn't for you or perhaps the placed you've worked aren't a good fit for you. It also almost sounds like you've become either disillusioned or depressed about your career choice. I'm male. I did my research. I'm not on ativan or paxil. Is nursing tough? Yep. Others have described me as incredibly tough and resilient. Don't get me wrong. I can tell very quickly when a place has a high potential for toxicity or actually is toxic, but I can also tell pretty quickly when I'm the one that's not a good fit. I'm at a place where I've been for 12+ years. I've been places where I was there long enough to find another job because it was that toxic.

This isn't my first rodeo.

Men, nursing can be very, very manly. If you want to be a nurse, do it!

Wonder who has run out of their Paxil here.

You quit your first nursing position due to the stress, and remain negative on the entire profession.

If a person has earned their degree and can stand the heat in the kitchen.. they will endeavor to use that degree.

Agree that corporate America is making it more difficult... but we must keep on.. keeping on.

Where are placing your efforts now?

OP, how do you not know how to spell Ativan? I'm not judging you but your attitude is not really the best and I hope this attitude is not what you're presenting when looking for jobs. It's frustrating when you train for something and things don't not going the way you envisioned. But dang, insulting men and foreigners in one post is just uncalled for, really...

Sorry but a manly job is defined by the man doing it, not the job. :)

Let's not attack the messenger. There is some truth that working conditions are bad in many places and getting worse because of the corporate takeover of healthcare. It can be hard to find a job with good working conditions. Wages are stagnant. Many of us have voiced our frustration about nursing and have even discouraged our children from going into nursing. He's entitled to his feelings. Hopefully he will find a better job where he can be happy and at least find some aspects of nursing that are likeable. Hospitals have hired foreign nurses en masse over the years to save money and most stay in America and bring their families along too. I find it ironic how many people want to live in the US and we don't even offer national healthcare. I think it is shameful that we our one of the richest countries in the world, but don't even offer national healthcare for its citizens!

Specializes in hospice.

Not everyone agrees that national healthcare should be a goal.

Nursing managed to score twice in the 2014 Best Jobs top 10!

Is there bad side? Absolutely. I don't think there are too many jobs out there that have no bad side. Or many jobs that haven't outsourced cheap labor.

Nursing is a service job (and vitally important), if an individual took the easy way in to make some easy money, then it probably wasn't the best choice. Nurses work hard for their pay but at the end of the day most are rewarded in both their paycheck and their self worth.

It's not for everyone and that's totally fine. I wish the OP would try changing jobs and/or investing more than a year in the field before giving up on it.
