Career Decision - Need Some Real Advice

Nurses Men

Published

Ok everyone, how are ya today? Good. Here it goes (and you may have heard this dilemma before)

I am 34 (soon to be 35). I have but A&P and Micro left as prerequisites for entry to a BSN program. I've crunched numbers, to figure out relative costs for training and things. My problem is this: time-wise it will take me just as long to either go to osteopathic school as it will nursing school. I have the science prerequisites for the DO program out here (as their BIOL requirements are not A&P and Micro) complete. I have a relative equal respect for both nurses and doctors alike. I don't want to make a wrong decision here. I am nearly 35 as well and part of me wants to REALLY get my RN and go from there whereas the other part would like to know how far I can go in a DO program.

I am really ripped up on this. I don't have kids and soon will be divorced. I've even asked myself if I were a millionaire what would I be doing. I'd still want to be in healthcare but still I don't know in what capacity. Is there an unbiased place to go in which to weigh the pros and cons of each? I could certainly use the advice of some folks that have been where I'm trying to go. Please?

Specializes in Peri-Op.

DO would be my choice. Then a residency in Anesthesia

Specializes in Emergency.

Just remember, even if you go to DO school, you have to do a residency after your 4 years of schooling... then possibly a fellowship. Timewise, you are really looking at 4-12 years depending on what specialty you choose.

Other then that, if time is not that big of a problem to you, I would choose DO school.
