I REALLY like the idea of flying home! Sorry about Encinitas, My hubby lived in San Diego and started laughing, he told me you have to be ready for a road trip and as much as he loves malasadas, he doesn't think it's worth it to travel that far! Heehee. Would love to have the recipe, but I'm definitely done with homemade malas for now! It's amazing to find where all that flour goes (in cabinets, on dishes, etc)

Encinitas is faaaar away! I have a Portuguese sweet bread recipe from my grandmother, if I can find it and you want it. Probably you could make it from that, just add a bit more sugar, after it's risen, break off the correct size "balls", let them rise again, and deep fry 'em.

Might be cheaper and easier to fly to Hono!!!

Have you checked any of these out? Tried to make them per a recipe from Leonards, all I can say is not quite there. Hope all is well with you

Hah, found some places for malasadas. First, a restaurant named Portugalias website: sdportugalia.com. then a lace called Kealani's at 137 west D Street in Encinitas phone number: 76094-ALOHA. Hope you get the best from one of these. Sounds like ono kaukau

Sorry, inadvertently posted on my own page! Sheesh, ask the gray cells to do one little thing! LOL. At any rate, I found the malasada ref on searching out Hawaiian foods. There's a strong Hawaii community in San Diego with luaus and other celebrations, can get shave ice, malasadas, etc there. I'll try to retrace my surf to try to find the address for you, laterz, Karen

I think we miss the food so much, but nothing beats being on the beach at nite, smelling that unique aroma of the Hawaiian air and hearing music coming from one of the hotels with a plate lunch. I've heard you can even get fresh malasadas in San Diego! I'd even do the monkey dance to get one (did I say 1!) of those!

So, how long have you been away from home? For me, it's been almost 20 years. We go to Wolf Trap and another venue to hear home music. Miss Zippy's saimin so much!
