hi Gericare001 - I graduated in 2004 and was interested in working with the elderly. During my senior year in nursing school I did my practicum in a rehabilitation hospital (not a nursing home...they are two different things) and went back to work there as a new RN. I enjoyed working with the more elderly folks and thought about obtaining the GNP. Only with a GNP you are legally licensed to work only with folks who are 55 and up . With an FNP you can work with infants to elderly people. With an ANP I am licensed to work with 15 and up in some places and I believe 13 and up in some places. Yes, it is harder to find a job working with only 55 and up. FNPs have the easiest time finding a job. I work in a rehabiliation hospital. Basically, I am an Advanced Practice Rehabilitation Nurse (An ANP in a rehab hospital) see: http://www.rehabnurse.org/pubs/role/advprac.html

What made you decide to go for your ANP? I'm a new BSN grad and was thinking about getting my GNP, but have heard so many discouraging comments from this board ...such as , you're limiting yourself, you should go for the FNP or ANP...so I was thinking that maybe going for the ANP and then specializing in rehab would be something closer to the GNP (or rather working with the elderly pop) and not limiting myself and being more marketable. I'd welcome any comments or thoughts from you, considering that you've already completed your ANP. Did you have a difficult time obtaining a ANP job in rehab post graduation?

    THanks in advance,
    Daniela
