I can only imagine what your school year must be like so far. If your district is anything like ours, everything H1N1 is falling on the school nurse. Keep up the good work of looking out for the kids in your district!
Sorry I did not respond quickly, I spent the summer doing nothing nursing related, LOL! I bought School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text from NASN. It has some helpful stuff in it. I do not have PALS yet. I am unsure how much help it would be, since we are not in the hospital environment with all the meds and supplies available there. A really super emergency first aid course would be great, but I have not found one yet. I think in order to be successful you have to have good assessment skills. The You must know district policies forward and backwards and have someone you can call ANYTIME with questions. If you have good assessment skills, a good experienced school nurse who is available for you, and a few good resources you will do fine. You will surely make mistakes, I STILL do, but if you err on the side of caution it will be ok. You will do fine! Good luck!
Hi there, I just saw on a thread that you were a new grad when you started school nursing. I am about to embark on the same journey and am looking for advice. I have little hospital experience (only 3 months in an ICU), but the district was confident I would be able to handle the position even though I still don't have too much confidence just yet. Do you have any recommendations as far as continuing education and/or textbooks/references that helped you? What about PALS? Do you think it would be beneficial for me to do it now or to wait a little while? Thank you in advance for any advice you can give this newbie!
