Been at WHMC for about 1 year. I was an AF officer in another career first & then went through a 2nd degree BSN program in 05. Graduated in 06 & have been working PICU since then. One thing I would urge you to seek out from your recruiter is a trip to an AF hospital to shadow an AF nurse for a shift or two. My experience coming back into the AF was a trainwreck, but I knew it was what I wanted, so even though the timelines were lengthy I knew it would be worth it.
Our unit is routinely much slower than the civ unit where I trained, & it's quite a bit smaller. WHMC is probably the easiest assignment to get, but even if you come in as a critical care nurse you can still be reassigned to med surg to fill in the staffing gaps. Ultimately, you will be an officer 1st & a nurse 2nd. Lots of folks disagree about that distinction, but that perception helps me through the bureaucracy that comes with the military .
Wish you the best in your decision...it's a huge one. Keep asking questions.
