- Hello Lady_Vol,
I read your post about the ETSU second degree program. I was wondering if you applied and how did it turn out? - Feb 05, 2009 02:57 PM - permalinkyoucandoitHi Lady_Vol,
I am in the process of studying for my Hesi Entrance Exam scheduled on 02/28 and was hoping I could ask you a couple of questions about the test. - Be happy to help. You should know your ounces conversion, like how many ounces in a gallon, cup. You know, like basic cooking stuff. Cups in pint, etc.
You need to know your ratios, 1:4 is 1/4 in conversion.
5/20 = 1/4 = a 1:4 ratio
Do you have the HESI review book from evolve. If you do, the math is EXACTLY like that review section. I mean EXACTLY. Work through each of the problems in each section in the review. Don't worry about the Practice test. Work the 10 practice problems for each section review and you will be fine.
REMEMBER, YOU HAVE A CALCULATOR! USE IT! This is not a timed test. Take your time. Check your work and work backwards to double check your answer, if you are unsure.
With the calculator, I didn't think the math was too bad. I thought the Reading Comprehension was the toughest section. It seemed like many of the answers seemed the same. Read carefully and take your time.
If you don't have a study guide, here is one that I found on the internet for West Coast University. It should help you on your sections, as well.

I know it's hard to answer questions, over the internet. But I'll be happy to help as much as I can.
Remember on multiplying fractions you line them up and multiply across:
1/4 x 1/4 = 1/16
Remember in dividing fractions you invert the second fraction:
1/4 / 1/4 is solved by : 1/4 x 4/1 = 4/4 = 1
On adding and subtracting fractions, remember to find a common denominator.
1/2 - 1/4 = 2/4 - 1/4 = (Solution: 1/4)
Improper fractions can be converted by multiplying the denominator by the whole number and adding the numerator to the sum: Example: 3 1/2 converts to 7/2. (You multiplied 3x2=6 and add the numerator (1) so 6+1= 7. Place the sum over the denominator (2) to get the answer. 7/2. Hope this is clear.
It's hard to explain this over the internet, but I hope that helped and made sense. If you have trouble, please contact me, I'll be happy to help. I'll watch my online account more closely so I can answer questions for you before next Tuesday.
One last thing, if you are taking the computer test, you cannot go back. Once you answer and move on, no going back. Make sure you are comfortable with your answer before you go to the next question.
Study, review everything, but relax and get a good night's sleep before the test. Make sure you eat something that morning and make sure you allow plenty of travel time to get to the test. You don't want to get stuck in traffic and arrive all frazzled.
You can do this! You're smart and you've gotten this far. Relax and do your best. You'll be fine! - Hello, I was reading the post regarding the Hesi and was wondering if you would be willing to give any advice/tips on taking the exam. I will be taking it this coming Tuesday. I will be taking the Math, Reading, Vocab and Grammar sections. The math part is what I am dreading the most so any advice regarding this would be helpful and appreciated especially in the area of fractions(subtracting, substracting mixed numbers)
