  1. School's Almost Out !

We get out May 31! Hooray! It's been a very stressful year. Probably the hardest one that I've ever had as a school nurse. I'm ready for summer break! :yelclap:
  2. Nurses Day...are you forgotten ?

My boss always gets us a flower or something. The school always sends a bouquet of flowers or candy and a baloon. One year they sent me a candle assortment with other goodies. No, they don't forget us here. It's on the school calendar.
  3. New grad not wanting to work

Why not work in a doctor's office or something during the day - maybe as a sub in the school district one day a week just to stay active? Just a thought.
  4. Educating UAP to assist with self medication

What age group are you talking about? Our certified teachers give medications on field trips - not aides or anyone else. It's in the school board policy. If it's an inhaler or something and the child knows how to use it, the child just does it an...
  5. Just starting a school nurse position

Oh my. Do you know what your state mandates are? We have to do hygiene classes, hiv classes, cpr etc. It's all mandated by the state that you live in. It's a lot more than band-aids and gum in hair. Good luck. I'm sure the first year will be a ...
  6. Best to start at elementary, middle or high school?

I started with 3 - 5 year olds. Definitely difficult. They don't know their names half of the time, much less their phone numbers or addresses. After 3+ years I moved to the middle school. I just love it! They are difficult at times, but much m...
  7. CPR question

We just had to have a basic adult and child course when I started. Now, I am a CPR instructor on all levels. We all had to be certified and have to keep it up so we can teach other staff and sometimes the older kids.
  8. Transporting Students

I have to transport. The school district is required to cover us because they require us to do it. I limit it the best that I can. I usually only take home very sick children who's parents do not have transportation or cab fair. I will not take h...
  9. Smoking

    Exactly!
  10. School nurses can you help me?

I don't know if this applies to private schools or not, but there is IDEA and the disability act. I think this sounds illegal and would never be tolerated in the public school where I work. There are lawyers who specialize in people with disabiliti...
  11. anorexia in middle school child

It's one of my kids at school.. I'm a school nurse. We've only known about this since lunch so we are working together to formulate a plan. I have the school counselor and teachers as resources and, as yet, have been unable to contact the parent. ...
  12. anorexia in middle school child

Does anyone have an resources to deal with anorexia/possible bulimia in middle school aged children? I have a problem brewing right now and need any help that I can get for a 13 year old girl.
  13. School secretaries dispensing meds?

Even though I am full time on one campus, I have two buildings. The secretaries will allow students to use their inhalers in the office. As far as any other medications - NO. They call me on the radio and, if I couldn't make it on time (due to tak...
  14. Becoming a school nurse

It really depends on your luck. Substitute nursing is a good in, though.
  15. It's That Time of the Year!

I will go back Monday. 520 middle school children. I really enjoyed my summer but I miss some of them.
