  1. Job Responsibilities

I am with you Marijke. I love to scrub!! I would hate to have to always circulate. I too love the powertools!! I have been able to do so much more around the house with the knowledge I have gained from this!!! I am serious!! Both roles are grea...
  2. Surgical Cap

I have all home-made hats (and a super mom). She has even made me a great warm-up jacket. The patterns are from wal-mart.
  3. Circulators

InCanada, where I practice, you must be an RN to circulate in an OR. If an RPN tech. has an RN in the room (who is not scrubbed in), she may then do circulating duties with direct supervision. We only have 2 techs in my workplace. They may not rel...
  4. Never cover a sterile set-up!!! It is near impossible, as already mentioned, to remove a drape without contaminating it.
  5. Maintaining a Sterile Field/OR Suite

We will put a sign on the OR suite doors indicating that there is a sterile set-up inside. We have a 2 hour window. This works well for us. No post-op infections etc....from this occasional practice.
  6. What are specific duties for the scrub...

One word...............TEAMWORK......maybe you could address this at your next staff meeting
  7. Has A Surgeon Ever Thrown An Instrument At You?

I have heard stories of the same in my OR. I have only seen it once, I guess they grew out of it. I had a surgeon throw a sharp trocar in my general directon, without looking. He did not hit hit, or mean to. I did not let him forget it. I made s...
  8. arterial lines

Our heparinized saline is prepackaged. It is true that they need not be. Many facilities are now using only saline. Our docs were approached about doing the same. They declined.
  9. OR Student Experience

I guess, that with the current nursing shortages, you probobly don't need to have experience as an RN to get a job in the OR. However, you really should have at least 2 years in a surgical setting. Pretty much anybody would tell you the same thing....
  10. Passing meds in the OR

We don't have a P&P for this either. We are however, extremely careful with meds in the field. We will use sterile martkers to mark things if there is any chance of a mix-up, also using differnt syringe sizes for different meds. We all say alo...
  11. OR Verbal Order Documentation

Anything we do in the OR, we document on the OR record. For example, if the doctor asks us to give a gram of ancef, I document it on the meds portion of the record. If any specimens are sent, I tic this off as well. Even if the anethetist asks us ...
  12. Prep

Hi there. Where I work, the patient arrives in the OR having rec'd a pre-op scrub with a hibitane scrub brush. In the OR, the patient in prepped with betadine in the usual fashion, wiped, then prepped with alcohol, and wiped again, the skin is the...
  13. Nurse Impersonators

Very interesting thread. I know that when I worked on the floors, there was constant confusion about who was who. One of my favourite scrubs was the same colour as the dietary staff began to wear. I was often given empty food trays from my patien...
  14. Sales Reps. in OR's

I only just checked back to the site...sorry took so long. To my knowledge, nothing is singed re universal precautions, etc...I can see why CEO is concerned with this. However, the rep. knows he can not touch the sterile field, and stays back from i...
  15. Laporoscopic to Open cases

In our OR, we have a lap chole cart, bowel cart, etc...It is in the room for whatever it is that we are doing. On it is what we need for the laperscopic version, as well as a box containing what is needed to open. It is a very smooth transition re...
