  1. Fall 2014 SSC/UCF Concurrent Program

Financial aid for a Bachelor's degree is up to 120 hours for Bright Futures, and I think 112 for Pell Grant. I might be off on my numbers, but typically these students are eligible for an appeal that says they have x hours remaining. The tricky issu...
  2. Duke New Grad / SNIP 2013

Other hospital systems do, but not Duke. Also, remember there are hundreds of new grads applying to each position, and usually employers only pay for flights for interviews if you're bringing something to the table that they really want. Try Carolina...
  3. Apartment Walking Distance to Duke Medical?

Another fellow Floridian! Will PM you some info! :)
  4. Duke New Grad / SNIP 2013

Also near Colonial Village - Deerfield (across the street) is The Forest Apartments. They have furnished apartments if you're just needing a place to crash for a few months until you get a better idea of the area. That's the route I went with until I...
  5. Duke New Grad / SNIP 2013

This may be a little late to reply, my apologies. As a CNI-New Grad, you will automatically be a part of the Nurse Residency Program, it is rumored to become mandatory, and a condition of employment as of January 2014. The Residency Program consists...
  6. New Grad Jobs

I interviewed with Duke, and the interview was very laid back, very exciting. They are definitely on the cutting edge of everything with technology, patient safety, patient satisfaction, patient outcomes. The benefit information I received was quite ...
  7. If it makes you feel any better.... During nursing school I had the opportunity to shadow in the emergency department. The staff was really eager to involve me in patient care and I was really excited to be helpful. I managed to put labels on the bl...
  8. The sight of blood makes me pass out.

I seem to say that to myself every day, but I still keep coming back. I must be a glutton for punishment! Now I have the heebie jeebies!
  9. Sick of 12s, but want a challenging job

Some hospitals still have 8 hours shifts (i.e., 0700-1500) that might work for you. Consider talking to your manager first, and if not, start looking around for hospitals in your area that might do this.
  10. Suggestions please, New grad asking for help

I've heard that upstate NY is a good location. You may not be able to relocate out of state, but perhaps a commute to a less than desirable area will be what you need to gain the experience necessary to start your career!
  11. Advice For Soon To Graduate BSN Student

The important thing is to highlight what YOU bring to the table, what makes you a stronger candidate for a position. If you don't have hospital experience, demonstrate customer service experience. If you don't have work history, demonstrate volunte...
  12. new graduate nurse taking TNCC ?

I joined as an RN with my NSNA membership number. I think the membership is only good for 1 year though and you might not be eligible for discounts on TNCC/ENPC or CEN since it's a "student" membership. I went with the student option for now, and the...
  13. Lateral violence

I believe the ENA has a lateral violence packet that can be downloaded. Perhaps consider implementing this in your workplace?
  14. New Graduates who don't welcome feedback

I think taking a step back, letting them sink or swim (without risking patient safety) is the idea here. When they aren't being a team player and too busy in their phones or whatever (regardless of age) you just ensure you take care of your patients ...
  15. ACLS - Nursing Student

My BSN program had a critical care class that offered extra credit for taking ACLS and gave a discount for students wanting to take it. I figured it couldn't hurt me and wasn't terribly expensive. (BLS+ACLS+PALS=$300) I found that it wasn't difficult...
