    Poor thing! Your working south and living north???? Ummm let us know.how you like the traffic, leave 3 hours before your shift, plan for childcare 3 hours after, and GOODLUCK! Left the atx area never to look back!

    7p-7a isn't too bad, try to work your scheduled shifts consecutively or else you end up loosing days off because you have to sleep from the shift the night before and don't wake until 4-5pm on your day off...pros are if you hv kids they wont miss you...

    Also an L&D nurse, record and clear tje volumes infused hourly and it doesn't matter how frequently the dosage is increased. The ml/hr will be on your pump. Now YOU caan teach your preceptor something valuable!

    Our unit allows cell phones in pockets, if your not checking them or answering them at the bedside. We have a lounge for cell phone conversation. By the time your a working RN you should have the time management skills to allow for a 5 second review ...

  12. Feeling broken and there's no way out...

    Even with the BEST preceptor, its very hard to feel competent, knowledgeable, or very 'together' the first year. Hang.in there, find one or two people you work with who want to teach, and don't look at you crazy for asking questions.

    Us too, hospital wide, no nail polish, acrylics, or natural nails longer than the fingertip, which is fine on my unit because Im an L&D nurse and long nails would just be mean.
  14. Internal Fetal Monitoring

    I have screwed one in to my palm for demonstration purposes for parents apprehensive about allowing us to place the FSE. Completely painless, no blood, no laceration, although some times there is a small pin prick on babies head sometimes.

    We use Demerol for shivering routinely. Our section pts get dilaudid and or morphine, plus iv toradol, and leave the pacu with a PCA pump...
