  1. How did you come to work in corrections?

I was previously a correctional supervisor in Ca state prison and had to leave due to illness. I missed it so much I am currently in the process of re-instating into the system. Say what you will, but I'll take the correctional setting any day. Wo...
  2. What Freaks You Out?

This is too cute, I'm rolling around laughing. The thing that freaks me out most is the smell of burning flesh in the OR when they're cauterizing. That is seriously STIIINNNNNKKK!!! Yyuuuuuccccccccckkk! Anyone else grossed out by this??
  3. Sorry guys, I'm E-mailing Nursedude his answer back, so you'll have to check with him to see if he'll enlighten you
  4. Truthtelling in Nursing Care

Katie, I'm not sure what exactly you're asking. Do you mean if a pt has a disease and you know it should you discuss it with them? Only if that person has been informed by their physician and asks you for more info. Do you mean charting? As a nurs...
  5. Mijourney, Thanks for the backup. I recently heard of this site from one of my buds and instantly got hooked. You're correct, I worded it wrong, some of the people and situations in nursing makes it pathetic, not the profession itself. Let me know...
  6. nursing salaries

Here's my 2cents worth from so. cali. I make approx. 65K, do the math folks. I work in a state prison and personally feel much safer than I would in any ER or clinic. Additionally, I belong to the union, get dental and vision free and can expect a ...
  7. Before you guys get all excited and join the exodus to CA...NurseDude, I think I love you. I agree, nursing is pathetic. I work in corrections, Make approx 65K and have great retirement benefits, etc. My take on this is 1)how professional are we? ...
  8. SMALL HOSPITAL USA

That's a tough one. I'll give you my honest answer. I think you'll probably get a little more than a brand new grad, but only because you have some experience already. You were an LVN for 11 years, but you could not have been doing EXACTLY the sam...
  9. Nursedude, Hear hear!! Which makes it even worse when patients tend to take me and my peers for granted and see us as pillowfluffers and pillbearers. I found out in my first job in a hospital a few years ago that nursing care was covered in the pa...
  10. I've heard of that before. It's totally unfair and ties up your time. Additionally they're saving themselves money by paying you less. I'd go with an agency so you can set your own term and probably get paid more. You shouldn't have to commit if ...
  11. Nursing pay

Depends on where you live, your experience, area, etc. I'm in corrections (state) and make approx. 5600-5800 monthly. This is for 8 hr. shifts and I'm off Sat/Sun. You couldn't pay me double to work in a hospital again.
  12. NEW GRAD RN needs HELP!!

First of all, congrats!! The job hunt is on. May I suggest initially going into med-surg to give you the foundation, training and skills to be able to move into more specialized areas. You need that base to start and that area will also give you s...
  13. orientation

I agree. I've been in the system 2 years and we are also understaffed, forced to do overtime and have skimpy orientation. I sympathize with you, but encourage you to hang in there, it'll get better. Follow you intuition, remember your training and...
