University of Colorado Colorado Springs (FNP)

Hi! I'm so glad that I found this thread. I got accepted to the online FNP post-master's certificate program. I will also start this fall and live in California.

LTC experience is worse than no experience? True/false?

Hi Melody, Before I was able to get an acute care job I worked in LTC for about eight months. I see any experience as being better than no experience at all. Luckily, several nurses at this LTC facility worked at the hospital that I wanted to get a j...

    Becoming Certified

Thanks for the tips tokmom and midwestRN12! I hope to take the CMSRN exam early next year but it never hurts to start prepping early. Several of my colleagues have said that it was harder than the NCLEX but I guess I'll have to wait and see!

question: can you chart on a pt. being rude?

I will use quotes from the patient if necessary. Like others have said, just state the FACTS - no speculation, especially when documenting these types of things.

    Two questions...

I took the NCLEX about a month after graduation. I wanted my studying and school knowledge of nursing to be fresh. I started working in early September of the same year.

What do you love most about your floor/specialty?

I work in med-surg. I see a lot and get to do a lot and hone my nursing skills. It's a good job but I know that I won't stay in this type of nursing for the rest of my career.

Job Satisfaction: Can it be real in this field?

This is a HUGE reason why I dislike floor nursing. It disgusts me how nurses have to worry about something like this.

Different Piggyback Antibiotics, Same IV Tubing??

In nursing school we were taught to use different tubing for each IVPB. On the floor that I work on we use separate tubing. For us, it's probably more out of habit now!

    Not a real nurse huh?

We need nurses of all types. People who think school nursing is not "real nursing" should think about how schools would be without nurses like you. Good for you for doing what you love.

    Co-signature for Insulin administration

Our facility does not allow anyone but the licensed nurse to perform BG checks. In order for us to give Insulin we have to have another nurse double check the order and the amount to be given before our eMAR documents that the proper dose was given. ...

Skilled nursing vs. bed side at hospital???

In my experience, the answer to your first question is completely false. I worked in a SNF and successfully transitioned to a hospital. As for your second question, yes, a SNF does pay less than an acute care position (at least where I live). The be...

    Fitness and nursing

I exercise during my days off, but don't on the days that I work. I guess I feel too lazy before and after working. I know of at least one nurse who works out for about an hour before work; I wish I could be more like this!

    Rounding on patients at night

I check every 1-2 hours at night and don't wake the patient unless necessary. An example would be a Q2H or Q4H neuro check.

    JUST an LPN

I think the feeling of believing you could have done more/done something better is completely normal, whether or not it's your first code. Take this experience and use it as a learning opportunity. You will continue to learn more the longer you stay ...

    Thinking about Leaving Nursing

I would try to network and try to experience other types of nursing. For example, if you know a nurse working in a SNF, you could shadow that nurse sometime. A good thing about nursing is that there are many types of fields to go into. I hope you fin...
