About goshenc1

goshenc1 specializes in NICU.

I'm a 25 year old NICU nurse. It's my first job as a new grad. It's full of more challenges and rewards than I ever thought possible, but it keeps me coming back for more. The itty-bits (affectionate nickname for the preemies and micros) have me hooked around their miniature pinkies. :)

  2. Nurse with 10 years adult experience starting NICU ..... help!!!!

Nursed40- I'm a former new grad nurse and landed a job in the NICU right off the bat. I've been at it a little over 1.5 years now. While there's no truly "typical" day, I'll do my best! :) I usually get there and check my assignment and duties abo...
  3. number of IV starts

Same as NicuGal for the most part. We do the PIVs-2x per RN, 6 times for the RNs then notify NNP/MD. Usually they'll try at that point for a PIV as well. Frequent meds, antibiotics, long term therapy, etc will be candidates for PICCs. PICC nurses...
  4. New Grad and would like advice about NICU

My NICU hires new grads- lucky for me! I applied online through the hospital's website. Got a call back, interviewed in person (panel style interview), and was offered the position. As far as my resume before getting the job- BLS/CPR certified of cou...

  6. Newer NICU RN - question avout basics! Weights, baths, etc...

Agreed with the previous comments about checking with your unit/hospital protocols. In my NICU we weigh the babies every night and bathe them M, W, F, nights. Regardless which night I'm working I cluster my baths/cares/weights. I tend to do them d...
  7. showing initiative for a NICU position

Getting that interview is a crucial first step, so congrats on getting that far! I was a new grad and got hired in a Level 111 NICU in an urban environment. Some things I believe really helped me get the job (I was offered the position about a week...
  8. Cooling

Esophageal probe (continuous), skin temp probe (continuous, and specific to the cooling machine set up- not the one used on the beds), and axillary temps are what we use.
  9. Starting NICU in 1 week in need of helpful tips!!

I'm a NICU nurse and it's my first job as a RN right out of school- here's my 2 cents worth: - Buy a little book that you can fit in your scrub pocket. Fill it with info you learn on the job- your hospital's normal lab values, procedure guidelines, ...
  10. What experience needed for NICU

I can say from personal experience not all NICU's require experience. My first job as an RN is in a level III NICU, I've been at it for nearly 7 months now. It really depends on the hospital, city, demographic, etc as to whether they require previo...
  11. would this be useful?

Does anyone know of patterns for hats? My mom knits but isn't a nurse and has never been in a NICU before. I'm about to start my first job in a NICU and she really wants to knit hats for the babies. If I can't find any patterns for her I might jus...

  13. New Grad NICU Support Thread

Rnpic, I'm not sure how much my experiences will help you, but they might so here it goes. I graduated nursing school in August, took and passed my boards in November, applied for positions (NICU, residencies, etc) in December, and interviewed in la...
