I love being a nurse!

  1. Best way to space out 12-hr night shifts?

Another vote for 3 in a row! And as far as sleeping during the day-- get some light-blocking curtains and a white noise sound machine. I liked to go straight to sleep after work, no breakfast, no chit-chat, just zzzz.
  2. How do you "bond" with your patients?

First thing I do with a patient is smile big and introduce myself. That seems to make them a little bit more at ease. It's a small gesture, but a genuine one (most of the time), and it goes a long way.
  3. Adult experience only but want newborns!

I wonder if actually being a mother counts as experience!?
  4. Do you do venipunctures as a nurse?

I have no idea if it's a violation or not. It was completely voluntary though.
  5. Do you do venipunctures as a nurse?

Wow, it is very surprising to me that venipuncture and IV's aren't taught in so many nursing schools! This seems like a fundamental skill that all nurses should at least be familiar with, even if later on it isn't needed for a particular position. A...
  6. Any new grads starting at Johns Hopkins Hospital in July?

Scurves, how did your interview go? What was it like? What questions did they ask? Did you meet with the hiring manager as well? I have an interview for the ED.
  7. Johns Hopkins new grad 2011

Wow, thanks so much for the info! I won't worry about not hearing back from them just yet. I was prepared to start hounding HR! CONGRATS on the job and GOOD LUCK on your boards!!!
  8. Johns Hopkins new grad 2011

Sweetie85, have you scheduled an interview yet? I emailed the recruiter back 2 days ago and she hasn't gotten back to me about the interview. Maybe she is just forwarding on my application to the manager and he/she will have to look it over first. I ...
  9. Anyone who works at Mercy?

Hey Lemon Squeezy, Sorry no bites at your original post. I think there should be threads dedicated to each hospital in Baltimore! I was just wondering how you like it there at Mercy? I have an interview there and also at JHH. Although working at JHH...
  10. University of Maryland SON FNP Fall 2011

Well, the wait is over for me-- "Decision Made: Rejection-Application". Now comes the embarrassing part of telling everyone I didn't get in. Even though I knew it wasn't likely for me, it still sucks. Going to cry now. And look for jobs....Good luck...
  11. University of Maryland SON FNP Fall 2011

A few nights ago in a panicked frenzy I applied to 16 different job positions. Have 1 interview so far. I hate to be so negative about my chances at Maryland because I really want to get in, but it's hard not to be completely hopeless at this point. ...
  12. Johns Hopkins new grad 2011

I'm pretty sure it's just for this ED position. All units have different staffing needs, so it may not be the case for the other positions listed.
  13. Johns Hopkins new grad 2011

I applied 2 days ago for a position in the ED at JHH. I got an email tonight from a nurse recruiter saying that the hiring manager doesn't foresee any openings until Fall 2011, but I can still interview. I guess that means it's a "waitlisted" positio...
  14. University of Maryland SON FNP Fall 2011

Haha, I only applied to Maryland as well (what was I thinking?!) As far as buffing up the old resume, I can only assume that a lot of pertinent experience helps, as well as excellent recommendations. Surely it helps to have more certifications, like ...
  15. University of Maryland SON FNP Fall 2011

Well, I've pretty much given up hope on this one. I haven't been contacted for an interview and it's late April already, and there's so few people who are admitted-- just don't think I'll be one of them! Although it's not officially over, I am busy a...
