  1. Suggested reference books for nursing school...

Whichever Fundamentals of Nursing textbook your program requires. I also like Mosby's Medical Dictionary (Of Medicine, Nursing And Health Professions). Maybe one of those pocket references for nurses, like RNotes.
  2. The attire debate - what should nurses wear?

When I worked as a HUC, we had a confused patient leave the hospital, so we had to call the police to go look for her. I actually almost lost my job because of a major role-confusion mix-up by the police officer. Our dress code is that the HUCs wear ...
  3. What do you think I should do?

I agree with Itsmejuli. That sounds like way too much to pay to get an LPN degree. Getting your CNA license would be a good thing if you have a while to wait--both schools and employers will look at work experience when comparing you to other candida...
  4. is it just me?

That handgun story reminded me: on the Neuro unit I used to work in, we had a patient with a history of physical violence toward staff members who snuck a machete into his room. "Just in case." Security came to take custody of the weapon for him unti...
  5. What kinda watch....

We were told it had to be a watch with a second hand, not a digital one. And I got a $10 one from Target. So far, it works extremely well! And looks nice, too.
  6. patient friend request on Facebook

So true! It's really not a "generational thing" to want to separate your private life from those people you don't really know. I'm in my early 20s and I have no problem blocking and ignoring people on FB. My friends list is limited to those people I ...
  7. Is there a place on your care plan where you can include your rationale for prioritizing the Maslow physiological need lower? I'd think if your rationale is well-written and well-thought-out, your nursing instructors shouldn't have much of a problem ...
  8. patient friend request on Facebook

You can pre-emptively block her so that she can't see your info, your name on a friends list, or even do a search and have your name come up. You have the right idea for sure--I would never be "friends" with a patient on Facebook!
  9. How did everyone do this semester?

I did great--I passed, in a program that's basically pass/fail. Some people talk about grades and how they're so mad/glad about the A they did/didn't get, but really...in a program that will fail you out based on one skills practical exam, the letter...
  10. Unit sec/Ward clerk while in NS.. Anyone?

I have been both a unit secretary and CNA for four years (currently not working there b/c of NS, but left on very good terms). I honestly think the unit sec. position prepared me MORE for what I had to learn in NS. I got to talk to doctors, radiology...
  11. actual and potential problems:s?

We had to do this with our case studies this semester (I'm a 1st-semester ADN-RN student) and our instructors wanted actual and potential MEDICAL diagnoses along with other problems that could crop up (e.g. opioid tolerance for a person w/ chronic pa...
  12. What does "stomach flu" really mean?

Are you saying you've seen that written in a patient's medical record as their medical diagnosis?
  13. To Do: Over Summer Vacation

    Give birth. :yelclap:
  14. Med aides giving insulin

My younger sister is a med aide in a LTCF. This was recently changed at her facility, and she is now expected to give insulin as part of her assigned duties. She is pretty nervous about doing the injections--their training on this was very minimal.
  15. Throwing out Med Bottles, What else can I do?

My cat eats paper, including my homework when I forget to put it away overnight. Then she barfs all over whatever remains. That should obliterate the patient names quite nicely. You can have her.
