  1. How old is too old to become a new RN?

I decided to bag a long career in IT to make a difference in other people's lives before I retired. At age 57 started an accelerated 2nd degree BSN program at Georgetown Univ. Finished at age 59. I'm now 65, working as an oncology nurse at a hospita...
  2. How old is too old to become a new RN?

You're never to old to do something new. I spent 35 years in IT management and sales before deciding I really wanted to spend my last 10 years of work doing something in healthcare. So at age 57 I started the accelerated BSN Program at Georgetown Un...
  3. The Guys Club: Guy Students Come on In!

Hi guys, BS in Computer Science in 1974. BS in Business Admin in 1995. Spent 35 years in IT. Went back to school 5 years ago, full time. Accelerated 2nd degree BSN program at Georgetown. Finished at GU in 2011 at age 59. Now a medical oncology ...
  4. Johns Hopkins new grad 2011

Realistically, JHH gets a huge number of applicants for every opening they have. Many nursing positions are only posted online for 1 day. So if you are not selected for one if these positions, you are in good company.
  5. Wow its really hard to find a job as a NEW GRAD RN...

I graduated with a BSN over a year ago (May '11), passed the NCLEX with flying colors and only got hired to work in a hospital this past week. And at that, it wasn't in DC/MD/VA - where I already own a home. About 9 months ago I decided to start ap...
  6. The Guys Club: Guy Students Come on In!

60 Y.O. (So you're never to old to go into nursing). Graduated last year from the accelerated BSN program at Georgetown. Going to work next month at a VA hospital. There were 8 guys in my cohort of 57.
  7. Johns Hopkins new grad 2011

Yes, they're both were in residencies. Once is in CCU the other is in Oncology.
  8. Johns Hopkins new grad 2011

I have friends working as new grads in both hospitals. I think you'll be happier at Hopkins, if you don't mind moving.
  9. Johns Hopkins new grad 2011

NC I-M jobs are for nurses with 1 year of experience or more. The new grad jobs are labeled NC I. I was hired as a new grad for an NC I job in ICU.
  10. ACLS

ok, so i need to take an online or in-person class first, pass an exam then do the "megacode." what's involved in the megacode? is it done one-on-one between a student and instructor, or in teams?
  11. Can RN's Work as PCT's?

Thanks for the feedback, Kimberly! I'll be sure to check them out.
  12. ACLS

I see that there are a number of companies that offer online-only ACLS training. But is there also a hands-on simulation required for certification, too? I'm thinking about doing an ACLS at my own expense to strengthen my resume, as I've been out ...
  13. Can RN's Work as PCT's?

It's now been 10 months since my graduation from nursing school in DC, and I'm still looking for my first RN job. And I'm really frustrated. Despite my 2nd degree BSN and good GPA, I'm concerned that I may not be getting hired because of my age (I'...
  14. Washington Hospital Center RN Residency October 2011

I registered for the February New Grad/RN Residency positions on WHC's website in early November. I don't think the posting is still there. Maybe there will be a separate residency program for experienced new hire nurses.
  15. GPA Requirements for Washington DC area schools?

I think the answer depends on what kind of nursing you want to do after earning your RN. If you want to work in a DC/MD/VA hospital in either acute or critical care as a new grad nurse, you will almost absolutely have to have a BSN. I know local ho...
