  1. Am I doing the right thing? New nurse getting butt kicked

I have been nursing 7 yrs. in med surg i have found that you take report, brush up on meds (which will tell you a lot about the pt's history), labs, then go see pt's. HaVING a good report sheet to right on is essential and sticky notes for reminders ...
  2. I agree with the abx. With my own experience with chronic sinus problems, if I use OTC meds and other methods, I will not need an abx. Comfort measures and treating the symptoms sometimes are what is needed
  3. Exhaustion bloopers

I use a fan but you can get apps on your smart phone that puts out some white noise. you can hook it up to your charger or to speakers that charge the phone while it plays.
  4. It would be from a nurse not you.

I have to admit that if I had to idolize someone, it would be based on family which includes 2 nurses, 1 teacher, a secatary, and a mechanic. Basically know what your doing and do it well
  5. I think a lot of it is that LPN's are taught the how and RN's the why. Critical thinking really comes with time and some people have a better critical thinking skill set then others, RN or LPN.
  6. Dear Student Nurse - a mentor's lament

I appricated the nursing instructors and my later bosses who asked me questions and made me think. We gotta be able to think on our feet and reason out what and how we're doing things. This is how we care for pts and catch some of tha mistakes that ...
  7. VENT: school still ruining my life after graduation

  8. Woman Calls C-Section "Rape"

This is a situation where open and honest communcation between pt and doc and other medical personnel is imperitive. Educated yourself as to what is going on
  9. Would you be a nurse if you knew then, what you know now?

I, like others, wish I had went for my BSN instead of getting my ADN. I think though I should have went for a teaching or other nerdy degree. I went for nursing to take care of my family better without thinking that I should either go for a longer de...
  10. A Sister Never Forgets

Thank you for telling us about your brother. I became a nurse in my late 20's. I learned before this when I worked in retail to pay attention to those with disabilities. I got several thank yous for going that extra step or two to make people feel w...
  11. Ruby's Marbles

Not knocking timeliness or time managment, but while working a small ccu a very good nurse told me that pt care is paramount. charting can wait.
  12. Woman Calls C-Section "Rape"

It was my experience that my OB was willing to work with me. My dtr was breech so I agreed to the csection. Whin I had my son, I was able to do vbac, although I had to be induced with him. My son was an 8 pounder. I stated I would have a csection wit...
  13. Thank you so much for the tips. Even those of us with nursing experience should go over pointers and webpages that help us with out charting.
  14. You Can't Make This Stuff Up!

To the poster who wanted to know why a preschooler would end up in a psych hospital...so the parents could take vacation. My first real nursing wake up call was in nursing school when I was doing my psych rotation. The staff at the acute care facilit...
  15. MRSA and patients who smoke

Most hospitals where I have worked as agency and staff have had the non smoking policy on campus. But most of the staff and MDs realized that we cannot keep a person in their rooms if they are mobile. At the hospital I'm working at now we offer a nic...
