EVERYTHING! I did 6 wks in mental health while I was waiting to start a new job-- outwardly non-stressful- but mentally-- hugely stressful. All those poor patients needing help and all we did was give them meds~ give me ED any day!

We often joke that our ED should be renamed 'The department of tea and sandwiches'. Our folks have such co-morbidities that they are assured of getting a bed and treatment when they are hungry and feel the need for a bed.

In our hospital (Australia)- my badge says 'acute care' and I work in Emergency. When I worked in ICU it said 'ICU', the other wards say the ward, i.e: medical, surgical, maternity- etc...
Good info above, I agree-- generally speaking you really need to be 'in it' to see where you want to go. I used to be an engineer as well! My paycheck cut in half as a new nurse- but love the work. I ended up in Emergency and love it! Good luck ...
