  1. Nurse to patient ratios

Similar scenario here........I work on a 24 bed interventional cardiac unit with a 12 bed CICU net door. As several posters have already said, there is a very high turnover, hence lots of paperwork. We have 6 PCI labs, plus EPS, so we are busy. Ass...
  2. Proud of Jeffords

As a native Vermonter, I must say I was very pleased with his decision. Certainly well done.
  3. Exhausted night shifter

In some ideal, some day, I will come off 12h night shifts. I really dislike it, an di am convinced it is taking years off my life. As an earlier poster mentioned, had she known this was what she had to look forward to after nursing school.....well,...
  4. IV Amiodarone

Amiodarine gtts are used on all cardiac units/floors in my institution.
  5. Experiences with Army ROTC/Army Nursing?

I did it for 2 years of my BSN and got out. It was simply not for me, and I don't regret it for a moment.
  6. I need info on post angio bed rest

As one of the larger catheterization/angioplasty center son the east coast, we are always trying to reduce the bedrest for the patient. As already posted, generally people stay on bedrest for 6 hours post sheath pull. We are also using Angioseals(c...
  7. hematoma

Depending upon the size of the hematoma, we apply manual pressure 20-30 minutes, then apply a Femstop or sandbag. For the groins that blow and result in large hematomas, sometimes a C-clamp. Depending upon the severity, may get an U/S thr next day.
  8. New Grad Stupids

Hehe, these are great! I still make silly errors, but one of my most memorable during my first months as an RN, was connecting a femoral arterial line to a regular bag of saline. For the first hour or so, I saw tinges of blood in the line, but I ...
  9. How honest should we be with our patients?

To me, it seems patients can sense what your workload is. I am honest with my patients, as there are those who still believe nurses are only around for bed pans and back massages. I think it is important to educate the public about our role and the...
  10. IABP Removal

Yes, you're in murky waters. I do not feel it is the RN's responsibility, I wouldn't do it. If someone is on a balloon in CCU, they are obviously not stable, and the MD needs to be there. Yes, we use Femstops. There's no way I would hold for 30 mi...
  11. Nursing is pathetic...

I couldn't agree with you more! Do I recommend nursing to anyone? HA! Absolutely not. That about sums it up for me... I am a 34 year old guy and live in Pittsburgh Pa. Have been an RN for 10years. I have done the following in nursing: Cardiotharac...
  12. Certainly a worthwhile topic.......The current facility I work in has MO in terms of being required to sign-up for a 12 hour on-call shift. This was managements creation due to inadequate staffing and a non-existant float pool, despite people signin...
  13. nurse diploma

Wow, i have followed this thread and found it to be rather exhausting and annoying, for that matter. Sparrow, you spend a great deal of time attacking people, attacking schools IN YOUR AREA, attacking BSN--new grads, and now you are attacking youth ...
  14. nurse diploma

Thank-you mable.......We have now launched onto a new topic of patient literacy/learning needs and deficits, etc.....I was not implying that it is wise to through around the medical jargon with patients because 9 times out of 10, they really have no ...
  15. nurse diploma

Clearly this has become a heated discussion, and people are becoming defensive........The path you take to become an RN all depends upon what you value and want from your education. I did a BSN program, despite others 'reminding' me I could get the ...
