Unapproved shots were flu vaccine, nurse says
Bill Mcauliffe and Chao Xiong, Star Tribune
    December 6, 2004 FLUSHOTS1206

The woman arrested in connection with selling purported flu shots last week at Augsburg College without the school's knowledge said the shots contained flu vaccine.

The 33-year-old woman from Albertville, Minn., a licensed practical nurse, made her comments to KMSP-TV as she was released from the Hennepin County jail Sunday after posting bail.

But she wouldn't say where she got the vaccine or provide other details.

She faces possible theft and narcotics charges, but she has not been formally charged.

State health officials are expected to begin testing today to determine whether vials seized Friday contain flu vaccine.

"I'm a good person and I didn't do anything wrong, and I will prove that," she told KMSP. "More importantly, I want those students to know they're OK. They got the flu shot."

None of roughly three dozen students, faculty and staff members known to have paid for the shots has shown any ill effects, Augsburg spokeswoman Judy Petree said Sunday.

The nurse's ex-husband told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that the shots were flu vaccine and that the $20 fee for each shot went to an American Heart Association fundraising drive at their daughter's elementary school. Neither he nor the woman's attorney could be reached Sunday.

The woman was arrested near her ex-husband's home in Belgrade, Minn., west of St. Cloud.

The woman, who had been at Augsburg earlier this fall administering meningitis shots, had set up shop Tuesday and Wednesday in the commons area of Christensen Hall, the hub of the Augsburg campus in Minneapolis. When a school official pressed her for information about her credentials, she abruptly left. She had claimed to be with the American Heart Association, but school officials later found that to be false.

The woman, whom the Star Tribune is not naming because she has not been charged, is registered as a nurse with the Minnesota Board of Nursing, records show.

The woman's former father-in-law said Sunday that she works for a nursing pool and has been giving shots at flu clinics around the state this fall. He said he understood she had permission from Augsburg.

"From this end, this really got wrenched out of shape," he said. "I feel sorry for [her]. She's really a good person."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

    Quote from PegRNBSN
Parents struggling to raise decent, well-mannered children in this swamp know, of course, that everything matters. Even the words we use. When we ignore the little niceties -- tolerating coarse language or behavior in public -- we invite larger fractures in civilization, which is a fragile facade after all.
    And so very well said....

Oooh! I saw that one before Scott!

Wonder why the mainstream media refuses to publish that!
Perhaps the mainstream media programmers couldn't fit this comprehensive information in a "sound bite" or these very same programmers feel that their audiences would not be interested in the material. Of course there are other hypotheses worth exploring to include Jack Nicholson's exclamation that they (the audience at large) can't handle the truth.

I know the election is over but it just makes good sense to study the results. As a registered Democrat in the Great State of Maryland I can honestly say that things aren't too bad (I would never immigrate to Canada for example) but I think that some of you fine folks would find the following link very interesting.

Apparently, I can only be level headed and mature when I agree with you. Apparently, only liberals are allowed free rein to express their grief, sorrow, and anger in a manner like this.

And as a registered Democrat in the great state of Maryland I respect your right to say it.

    How tragic!
Tragic yes but committing suicide over an election outcome reflects a much larger need for help. Mental illness, depression, "ineffective coping" and other such disorders are not a result of party affiliation. Democrats, Republicans, and Independents are all susceptible to such vulnerabilities. I don't like the slant of that particular press report as it seems to play into the already festering emotions of certain readers.
