  1. Would you consider a home birth?

I have to say that I dont understand where you get that the infant mortality rate is higest where there is good health care. In Iceland we have the lowest infant mortality rate in the world, 2.5 of a 1000. We have good health care system and a hospit...
  2. Speaking of Noise In The Nicu....I have a ?

This is the same thing I allways say! If they are healthy enough to make so much noise...they must be ready to go home. The noise in our unit is more from the staff and the monitor alarms than from the babies.
  3. oral vs. nasal intubation

We have them nasally 90% of the time. They are much more stable nasally and they almost never go out by accident. I dont like oral tubes, the tape gets wet from saliva and the baby is constantly sucking on the tube. Better to have the tube nasally a...
  4. How to treat umbilical cord?

Same here. But we do tub baths with the cord still on. No problems if we make sure to dry it properly afterwards.
  5. Best Practive for bathing neonates?

We don´t use any soap at all on any newborns. Just plain tap water (Our tap water is wery clean). We teach the parents to wait as long as possible to start using soap b/c it makes the skin dry. The only ones who get soap in the NICU are the old c...
  6. Funny/happy NICU moments needed

Just today we discharged twins who had been with us for 12 weeks and gone throug everything there is I think. The smiles on the parents and the hug and kind words from them were wonderful. This is why I do this, went trough my head. I love my job...

  8. hmm maybe time for a change....

I think everyone feels this way sometimes. It is so normal when things have been hard to want to go away. Somehow I have always gotten over these feelings but I sure have had them. If you feel the need to go away, just do it. You can always come bac...
  9. Would you consider a home birth?

I totally agree with you on this one! I would never have a home birth. I have seen too many things go wrong.
  10. looking for bath protocols

We dont tuch our Mec asp kids or PPHN either. Like one of our docs sais: "it is better to be a here dirty than clean in heaven". They usually get better in a few days anyway so we just wait.
  11. looking for bath protocols

We bathe our kids tvice a week. As soon as they are fairly stable the parents do the bathing. We only use plain water, no soap at all. Linen are changed as needed. We have a very low infection rate. So we are happy with this policy.
  12. Spinoff, NICU levels - does the definition need changing?

This is so complicated where you all are. Where I work we are level everything. We just take every sick newborn no matter what. We only send out complicated cardiac surgery kids but all the others we keep.
  13. Preemie resuscitation in regards to gestational age

We have a 24 week policy but it has happend that we tried to resuscitate a 23+some days with mostly bad results. But it all comes down to the neo on call this is not really a written policy.
  14. Really upset, bad shift last night

((((((Big Hug))))) Belive me I have been there too. Don´t beet yourself up about this I am pretty sure that you did everything you could for this baby!
  15. What type of surfactant do you use?

Hi! We use Curosurf and have been using it for a long time. We start out with one dose and then the docs tend to play it by ear. If the baby is asking for a lot more 02 then they give a second dose but othervise they try to hang on and see what happ...
