  1. any arkansas nurses or nursing students

I graduated from UAMS in 1988 and I highly recommend the program. I also had a good friend graduate from UALR and she is also a fine nurse. My brother lives in Conway and is currently checking out AD nursing programs. I realize my post hasn't help...
  2. Hi Gary! I live and work in the Tampa area. There are two very large county correctional facilities (one in Hillsborough Co. and one in Pinellas Co.) but all of the prisons are out in the boondocks. There is Coleman Correctional Facility up near B...
  3. Nurse's Sick Call

I work in a very large (population hovers around 3,000 almost all the time) county jail. We do not have 'open sick call' like some prisons do. The patients submit an '82' form, which is a request for medical attention, and the various medication nu...
  4. I walked out of the ER this morning...

dear jadednurse: Sorry you got a response like that (Neon8). You didn't deserve it. Both my mother and oldest brother get 'classic' migraines and they both suffer something terrible. They get auras and have take take Fioricet within 5-10 minutes o...
  5. Had Lasik done!!

I have been nearsighted since age 30. My two older brothers came down with the same thing at about the same age. I began wearing contacts shortly after being dx with nearsightedness, but after 8 years, I have had enough of the contact routine! It...
  6. dr kivorcian or not

I believe very strongly in physician-assisted suicide. I did a paper and presentation on it last year in grad school. Believe me, I did a great deal of research and the numbers indicate that neither the doctors nor the patients 'abuse' it. The gre...
  7. Where do you nurse?

I work in a county jail (3,000 inmates). My specialty is correctional nursing.
  8. Protecting yourself

I just wanted to add something--I drew a parallell line between jail inmates and methadone patients because, well frankly, we get a significant number of inmates who are methadone patients. I just went back and read my post and thought someone might...
  9. Protecting yourself

I agree with the above posters; you were not wrong in feeling concerned for your safety. I work in a huge county jail with all manner of pre-trial inmates and I would not feel secure about 'patting down' any of them. We are not taught what to 'pat'...
  10. I am a Florida nurse too! I live in Seminole, not too far from 3rd shift guy!
  11. Can a person live forever on a vent?

I went to college in Arkansas; and say what you will about Bill Clinton and hicks and all, but if a pt was brain dead (as mandated by the state via testing) the doctor was allowed by law to extubage and thereyby end the pt's life without the family's...
  12. Where do you nurse?

In a huge county jail (3,000 inmates usually) in medical administration. Full-time day shift.
  13. RN Diploma And BSN?

You don't have to pick a specialty to work in til after graduation. You will be rotated through med/surg, pediatrics, ob/gyn, a little OR, and public health as part of your training. Those are the usual areas schools hit anyway.
  14. DNR'ed from hospital

danvet-I became burned out re: hospital nursing after only 3 years (I was a traveler for a year and a half and I know all about being dumped on). I tried home health on a lark and it turned out to be one of the best changes I've ever made in my life...
  15. Manual vs. automatic blood pressure cuffs

Manually is more accurate. We use a Welch-Allyn vital sign machine (aka 'Robo Nurse') but if we get an unusually high or low value we alwayscheck it manually before calling anybody.
