  2. Hi, New to the Board

Well, all I can say from Texas, where winter is almost non existent is that I am jealous. Every year our family pays thousands to travel on a winter ski vacation and just visit the snow. I keep telling my husband that when he retires (in 8 years) t...
  3. Tranquil vs quiet: what not to say in an ER

Aren't we a superstitious bunch!! When reporting off to the next shift we say, "it has been a lovely day in the ER". Great idea about calling EMS to keep those friendly stretcher carrying folks at bay. If they feel loved by us maybe they will take...
  4. legal issues in the ER

You might also look at you hospital policy for its copy of the laws governing EMTALA. This is the governments way of making sure that people are "screened" and treated appropriately without being refused or inappropriately transfered to another hos...
  5. New grad advice???

I too recommend time on another floor before going to the ER. Critical Care would be adviseable. Even Tele. Because you have to be DEAD ON ACURATE with your drugs, doses and ability to titrate in a code in the ER. Sometimes many codes at once and...
  6. I Love It!!

Incredible AngelGirl, our ER is like that too. Get those new mommies up stairs before the water breaks. We like all of our patients to be those that have already had a couple of weeks or more to adjust to the outside world. Don't want to catch any...
  7. One Charge RN with all LVN staff in busy ER

You know, AngelGirl, I actually have encouraged our LVNs to return to college, commenting on what competent clinicians they are, but to no avail. Not one of them will make the effort to go back to school. They talk about the time commitment or the ...
  8. One Charge RN with all LVN staff in busy ER

Well, I have a meeting scheduled with her on Thursday, but I don't see an immediate solution. I told her that I will not sign off on the charts of the LVNs and that if she didn't think their scope covered the kinds of patients we get in this ER then...
  9. I am the charge RN in an innercity 40 bed ER that averages 250-300 patients per day. Many are hight acuity, telemetry or ICU patients since this hospital is a large heart - lung transplant center. I know many hospitals will not hire LVNs to work i...
  10. What could be the ramifications?

Have I missed something??? No one has suggested that the state board of nurses be notified?? Sounds like NOW would be a good time. Just venting.
  11. Rotation In Er.. Help!!!!!!

I am a charge nurse in a large innercity hospital and I agree that you should volunteer for anything. By the by, the ER is a great place to practice your IV starts. You will have literally hundreds of opportunities. Way back when I was in nursing ...
  12. One more

Actually the most current info from the ENA is no gastric lavage. They state that the risks outweigh the benifits. Our large innercity ER no longer lavages based on this and American Medical Assn recommendations which are similar.
  13. Anyone have experience with "ear candles"

HAVE USED THEM FOR YEARS, WOULDN' LIVE WITHOUT THEM. i FIND THEM VERY SUCCESSFUL. GREAT ADVICE NOT DO DO IT ALONE. ALWAYS USE A FIREPROOF TOWEL OVER THE HEAD AND CUT A BASEBALL SIZED HOLE IN THE CENTER FOR THE EAR AND THE CANDLE TO PROTRUDE. I FI...
  14. Complaints vs Safety of the Nursing Staff

Isn't it true!!!! And in our ER I find that it is usually the family causing all the problems and at the expense of the patient and his/her care. The family is complaining about how long everything takes, because they have things to do in the morni...
  15. Nursing jobs across the country?

You'll have no problem getting a job in any city you desire when you graduate. Almost all hospitals offer relocation packages with their contracts. They often do the interview over the phone for out of towners and then FedEx the Package with the co...
