Thanks for the support, I'm sure I'll have plenty to talk about when I start so I'll keep everyone posted.

Hi, just wanted to post that I was offered and excepted a position in the NICU. I graduate and take the boards in May. I smiled for 2 hours after I got the job. I am so happy. It really helped my confidence in regards to accepting this position as a new grad from all of the posts and discussions that the NICU nurses provide on this board. I feel that there are alot of people who support the idea of new grads in the NICU and have confidence we will do well. So thanks everyone!

Thanks for the info everybody! I have been away from the computer for some time now so I just got a chance today to check for replies. I really am looking forward to going to FL soon. We, up here in MI, just got our dose of winter...about 8-10 inches of snow. Thanks again.

Hi, I am possibly moving to Largo, FL in May. I was hoping someone would have any info about the hospitals in the area e.g. Morton Plant, Clearwater Community, or any others (especially a childrens hosp). I want to know the starting pay and if you've heard, or personally know of anything about the hospitals above. My parents live there and have neighbors who are nurses who claim pay is around $25/hr (that is starting pay with shift diff.) but I tend to think it is probably a lot less so any help would be very much appreciated. I am going to FL in March to check things out myself but it would be nice to read what people living there have to say. Thanks

I tip 20% or more. I also tip at ice cream shops and Starbucks, basically wherever they have a jar reading "TIPS."
I think it is rude not to at e.g Baskin Robbins ice cream where around here most of the workers there are highschool kids working a summer job. It takes some muscle to scope all that icecream on busy days. The least people can do is let them keep the change (coins). I also think that if you go out to eat with a group, $2 a piece for a tip even if that equals way more than 20%. Anyway, my mom raised us on her tips as a waitress and it was instilled in us not to be cheapskates.

Why don't you just tell "Look, I'm going to take my break for dinner (or breakfast... whatever) first today, then go...And by the way you should be alternating who goes first anyhow. You shouldn't have to eat cold leftovers everytime you work with her. If she has a problem with it just tell your charge nurse, who should be doing things fairly anyway, don't you check with her before you take a break? I speak from experience as this same story (plus a lot more crap) happened to me when I first got a job as a nurse assistant. I established taking turns for dinner breaks but she was still lazy at whatever she could get away with on the floor but at least I wasn't eatting cold leftovers rushing back up to finish my work. I don't work there anymore by the way. Good luck to you!

Thanks Kristi for the reply. I guess I just feel overwhelmed with everything I'm learning right now...sooo much information, and I know in my heart that I'll wind up working with children when I'm through with school. So I wanted reassurance I wasn't wasting my time. I can't work in Mother/Baby or peds until my last semester of school unless I go to Childrens Hospital but that would be a $4.00 pay cut I just can't afford to take right now. Everytime I'm pulled to Mother Baby I love it so much. Adult ICU is exciting and I think it is amazing what the nurses do for the patients. I'm sure it is equally great in NICU plus maybe a little more rewarding to know when you help them they usually have a whole life to live as opposed to ICU where you help an 76 yr old end stage renal ,or whatever, live for another few months or a few years. Anyway, thanks again and if you think of anything other NICU specific equiptment or info let me know.

I work on an intermediate ICU floor and am not yet a nurse. I was wondering what the similarities and differences between the two units are ...aside from the age of pt's. I know that on my unit we deal with Peg tubes, traches, vents to name a few. Are they(vents, trachs, etc.) the same in the NICU? Basically was wondering if it is benefiting me by working on this unit if my goal is to work NICU? Is there anything from my unit that will help me if I work NICU in the future?

    Hi,
A family member on my sister's in-laws side of the family died and the death certificate says cause of death sepsis, ischemic bowel, and low flow. Does anyone know any more about this. He originally went in for an anurism in the stomach to be removed. Then got an infection and they went back and removed his gallbladder. Then he died from the above 1 week later. A member of the family is having a hard time understanding his cause of death and I don't really know much about the diagnosis or what to telll her. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Where in Canada are you moving to? We also have quite a few nurses from Canada that commute over the bridge or tunnel to metro Detroit hospitals, again because of the money. The currency here is double its worth in Canada. So if you are moving to the Windsor area you might want to consider that idea. They pay is pretty good here compared to what I've seen others post around the country, and the cost of living here is not bad.

Hi, I was just wondering if you are one of the nurses that came from the Phillipines to the UK.
    You wrote:
"We constantly constantly loose our nurses in favor of britain,USA,ireland, singapore not to mention new zealand joining the band wagon."
I just noticed that your location is England, so I am just wondering.
Actually where I work we have quite a few nurses from the Phillipines, and no I don't blame them for wanting to live in the USA to make more money.

Way too many good ones to pick a favorite, but the first one that comes to mind is "Trading Places" with Eddie Murphy. I watch it and die laughing everytime it comes on. We even use phrases from the movie all the time( my sister and I) She even has her husband doing it now.
