  1. Early Extubation in micro-preemies

We also extubate ASAP to CPAP. By the way I love the little masks, but you have to be careful that they're not on too tight or the nasal bridge gets dented in. Our Neo seems very reluctant to surf some of the kids and pull the tube, which drives us a...
  2. Mixing drips, question pls...?

The NICU that I work in has always mixed our own meds and drips until recently. We don't have a pediatric pharmacist and are very leary of the meds etc. that we now get from the pharmacy so we are constantly double checking and frequently find error...

Check with local service agencies(girlscouts etc.) as well as quilters clubs, hospital auxiliary about donating quilts for the babies. We have several local organizations that donate for our NICU. Sometimes to the point of having too many. We let the...

  7. seniority

in our place seniority only seems to count for the vacation schedule, but we all get at least one summer week off with a possibility of a second summer week if those with more seniority don't take them all. I've been there 17 years and am still only ...

Ginger, I am so sorry for your loss and will keep you and all those who have suffered a loss in my prayers. The dept. I work at holds a memorial service every year in October for all those who have suffered a loss during the previous year. Our grief ...
  9. Busting at the seams!

We keep packing em in. i think it all comes down to the almighty dollar. Heaven forbid , we should actually give these kids the care they deserve. Administration in our place tries to butter us up by giving us pizza, doughnuts etc. once in awhile.( n...
  10. Psycho DON's

How they get therir jobs could be the old " if it's not who you know, it's who you bl***." Your DON's actions are totally out of line . My only suggestion would be to follow your chain of command and speak to his/her supervisor about the inappropria...
  11. It's even worse when the noncompliant patient is a family member. These people all sound just like my dad. Started out with diabetes and hypertension in his early 40's, but never took advice on diet and exercise. progressed to insulin dependent with...
  12. Staffing and acuity

Most definitely too much of a load. How on earth do they expect one person to adequately care for these babies? Agree with mimi2rn that there should be at least 2 RN's . If the person who makes these ridiculous staffing decisions actually had to do...

  14. boo hoo

Mental health days are great and a necessity in our line of work. Problem is where I work if you call off , you better come in the next day and act like your sick or you never hear the end of it. Some of the people I work with come in when they are t...
  15. The sats are in the toilet.....

Totally agree with above. We are supposed to be there to help each other out caring for our little ones. It is no wonder that the nursing profession isn't viewed as a profession by alot of people, especially when we degrade each other in front of ot...
