  1. Crumbs from the Crusty County Nurse

After all, I am older, but not quite old. I have been in the trenches quite a few years (and wish I could be on the benches for some of those days). I am not quite jaded (just a tinge green - maybe bile colored?) but still love what I do. So new nurs...
  2. You don't get to be a nurse for almost 20 years and not learn a few tricks of the trade to survive. Gallows, irreverent humor runs rampant; despite all the teachings contrary, you often end up referring to a patient by bed number instead of a name; y...
  3. To Assess or Not to Assess...

..should NOT be the question! Anyone else finding in report that assessments seem to be optional? Recent Examples: --A foley cath that is endorsed in report, but actually dc'd the day before --20 cm water suction for a chest tube actually bubblin...
  4. If you could change just ONE thing about nursing......

Nursing administration would have to work the floor/unit once a month... ...oh please oh please!

I love her books! Yes, she has written more; several "nurse mysteries." (No, not a la Nancy Drew.) "Panic," "Paradox," and "Fatal Diagnosis" are in the same vein (pardon the pun), These novels follow the same character in all three books, but will...
  6. Nurse Lojack System

Glad to know I'm not the only one out there who thinks this Lojack system has a high potential of being a huge code brown...

Our facility is implementing a new call light system. Nurses will be required to carry pagers, beepers, and cell phones to answer call lights. Rumor has it they (the powers that be) plan to log our response time, how long we are at each bedside, h...
  8. I feel like I have a twin out there with Fgr8Out. (I agree with every one of your posts!) And as for my two cents, I think work ETHICS come into play, not just the work shift. I've worked all the variations of shifts out there in the last 12 years,...
  9. What would you do?

I was an OHN/workers' comp nurse for five years. As you know, you absolutely did the right thing by sending that employee to the ER. You might remind your HR boss that the claims bill will be infinitely less money than that of the injured employee...
  10. How many of us are over 35?

The way I look at it, God willing you're going to be over the age of 35 anyway, so you might as well go for it... I'm 36, and I've been a nurse for (gulp!) 12 years. One of the best things I've ever done. Good luck!
