  1. Hypothetical Question re: prn meds

Thanks, fab4fan, for your input. I respect your insight. :)
  2. Hypothetical Question re: prn meds

Further details I didn't feel relevant at the time: This was not a surgical pt. Pt had chronic, low-level pain. Pt initially reported "it helped some" & rated pain after 15 minutes of 5/10 rather than 9/10. Pt had also had an oral prn pain med ...

  4. Hypothetical Question re: prn meds

  5. Hypothetical Question re: prn meds

sorry i look so stupid in this issue, but i really have forgotten. i usually give the entire dose unless the pt doesn't want the whole thing, and they usually don't change their mind. so please, this is a serious question.
  6. Hypothetical Question re: prn meds

OK, so here's what I have: 2pm: 1 mg Dilaudid given for 4/10 pain 3 pm: pt reports no relief 3 pm: pt given 1 mg Dilaudid and the next dose would be at 7 pm--with the pt having only a total of 2 mg of med on board for only 3 hours out of 5?
  7. Hypothetical Question re: prn meds

But then, doesn't the problem become when to give the next dose? I mean, suppose you go ahead and give it. Then the next dose for the full 2 mg has to be 4 hours from the 2nd mg instead of 4 hours from the first mg. Either way, it seems the pt has to...
  8. I don't know how the subject came up but here's the scenario: Dr. orders 1-2 mg. Dilaudid IV q4h. Pt doesn't usually ask for pain meds, rates pain low. You give 1 mg. In only one hour, Pt reports no relief. Do you give the other 1 mg? or do you make...
  9. Am I Nutz?!?!

Honey, you about nailed it insofar as what the job entails--on the negative side. You also have to get through nursing school, during which you will magically transform from a normal person with a generous portion of common sense, to a complete bli...
  10. Ever try the AJN? I like that one. Here's the link. Enjoy. http://www.nursingworld.org/ajn/2003/03home.htm
  11. Am I Nutz?!?!

Actually, it might be a better question to ask (although a lot longer): What do you see yourself doing when you are a nurse? Lead me through what you think your shift will be like.
  12. Am I Nutz?!?!

OK...putting on the Dr. Phil cap for a minute: Can you answer these questions first? What is a nurse? What does a nurse do?
  13. How Nursing Has Changed Me

In 1983, someone asked me "Who are you?" I can finally answer: I'm a nurse. And I've never been so freakin' happy with my life, in my whole life. I feel like Cinderella. I love everybody. PS Trust me, that's not just a change. That's a co...
  14. Morphine and respirations

An excellent CEU topic is here, and here is a great read to answer those questions. You don't have to pay for it to read it, and it's extremely interesting with latest research, in particular #8 question and answer. Enjoy! http://www.nursingcenter...
  15. What does it mean when a report says..
