Joint Commission specifically says if you have direct patient contact you may not wear artificial nails. If you do and they make an unannounced visit (which they now can do) your facility will face a huge fine and marks against. They started enforcin...
  2. use of ED tech/UAP/CNA in ED

I know some of our promising new people were great until it was explained to them that, "We can't do everything the RN's ask us to because that makes then lazy" or "You shouldn't do any extra work because then they'll always expect you to do extra" O...
  3. Please don't eat your young.

The main thing I see in students in the ER is "attitude". If you come as a student with the attitude what all can I learn and see in my limited time there you will do fine. But I have seen so many who have said Oh I don't need to start an IV I alread...
  4. What nursing school did everyone attend?

I attended Sewickley Valley Hospital School of Nursing. I would highly recommend it to others. We had a lot more clinical time and we were associated with La Roche College.
  5. Any and all opinions appreciated!!

If you really want ER go for it. I did and I don't regret it. It won't always be easy - even the most experienced have rough days. In June it will be 2 years for me. I was a volunteer EMT for 11 years and also worked as an ER clin tech while in schoo...
  6. Are you a member of a professional nursing organization?

Yes, I belong to ENA (Emergency Nurses Association).
  7. Phenergan IV changes in policy

My hospital took Phenergan off formulary. The only way we can give it in the ER is IM. Zofran is now our first choice then Compazine, Reglan etc. The ambulance companies currently still carry it but that is to change too.
  8. Name hospital and salary--everywhere

In Western PA starting at my hospital for RN no experience is $20.18. I'm in the ER with 1 1/2 yrs experience. We had a small sign on bonus ($2000).
  9. Proud to say or keep it hid away?

I rarely tell I'm an RN unless asked. The medical questions were bad enough when I was an EMT! I too hate the looks when you refer them to their doctor or can't solve their problem.
  10. ER Dept Scrub Color

I was looking through old threads and found this interesting one. Right now at the hospital I work at we are becoming color coded. Last year the nurses voted (union) to wear navy/white. Jackets could be print as long as the dominant color was navy. T...
  11. Just say NO! Where I work we are union so the nursing office has to make the phone calls. Sometimes I go in usually tell them for only 4 hours and sometimes I say No, I can't. In one three day stretch the nursing office called me 5 times! They heard ...
  12. disrobing psych pt?

Voluntary or involuntary go to the psych suite, disrobe, gowned, belongings to locker with security and patient is wanded (for metal and weapons).
  13. Congratulations! I'm on my second year and wouldn't change places with anyone. Don't forget to keep the doc updated on the patient. If their blood pressure is dropping the doc needs to know. Any unusual changes tell the doc. I had a patient last mont...
  14. Pt demanded a stronger pain med

[color=#483d8b]it starts when you put them in a room and tell them to undress and put the gown on, opening in the back, please. i usually get "i have to take my clothes off?" well, yes, if the area you are complaining about is covered with clothing, ...
  15. A nurse once told me while I was still in school, "when you graduate you will find out how much you don't know". He was so right. Don't be afraid to ask questions. The know-it-alls are the most scarey! I especially see this in the ER with students. T...
