  1. I used to work in a very small ICU, and there would only be two nurses on at a time. If there was something going on in the family or my husband was out of town I would leave my cell phone at the desk so the other nurse would not have to take my pers...
  2. How was Nurses Week celebrated at your Facility

We got free pizza from a local pizza place today for lunch. I thought that was great!
  3. BSN RN & Certifications not allowed on my badge: I am outraged!

Do you honestly think that your average patient even knows what a BSN is? I don't think so, but then again I live and work in a hicktown where there are a good number of people who can't even read. There is not a hospital in this area that will pay ...
  4. Dogs and Nurses

I currently have two dogs, a golden retriever and a golden retriever mix. I got the mix while I was in nursing school. I was living with my boyfriend at the time so there were two of us to take care of him. On days when he was at work and I was at sc...
  5. Lighting at night

We did this where I used to work, but we waited until after night shift made first rounds. I never minded it.
  6. How long were you held before being allowed to transfer?

The facility I used to work at has no policy as to how long they can hold your transfer. They just hold you as long as they can which can really stink. I was held for 5 months when I transferred from med/surg to ICU.
  7. Strangest thing ever said to you by another professional.

I just thought of another good one. I had a doctor tell me that my ventilated patient's sats were low because she has sleep apnea and it is night time. I'm glad the respiratory therapist was in the room to hear this too. We just looked at each other,...
  8. Strangest thing ever said to you by another professional.

When I used to work as a unit secretary, the hospitalist asked me the cause of death on a recently expired patient. She said "Did she stop breathing?" I would assume so.
  9. How do you manage to get to work in snow storms ?

I have lived in PA all my life so I am well aware of how the weather is here. Knowing this and being a nurse, I would never purchase a vehicle that is not 4WD or AWD. I just take it slow when there is snow and ice. At my institution you will not get ...
  10. Just a little night shift venting about day shift...

When I worked med/surg the rule was enacted that LPN's had to have an RN listen to report with them there was often more than one person that you were giving report to. Numerous times I would walk in and sit down in the morning, and there was no atte...
  11. Fitness and Nutrition for Nurses

I haven't heard this, but it sounds great. I think there are a lot of nurses out there that care for others, but neglect their own health.
  12. Second languages? Third? Or more?

In some areas of the country you would definetly be a commidity if you were fluent in Spanish. On ocassion I have even seen job listings for bilingual nurses. The schooldthat I graduated from offered a medical Spanish course. You might want to check ...
  13. Does this sound strange to anyone else?

I work for a small rural hospital. I recently applied for a job with the home health agency that is an affiliate of the hospital. However, they function as seperate companies so I have to go through the entire process rather than just tranferring to ...
  14. cigarette breaks

I agree that is good to take breaks, but 45 minute breaks are ridiculous. Even when I quit smoking I would take "smoke" breaks just to get out and get some fresh air.
  15. I can't give up my Christmas trees.

Where I work, when it is time for tubing changes or a I have a new patient I only get the number of tubings that I need. I run things on the same tubing if they are compatible. I don't know why I bother though, because I will come in the next night a...
