  1. Want to move to the OR

Somedays it can be fun to watch a surgeon explode.. as long as it's not directed at you.... I could write a book with all the crap I've seen by being in the OR almost 6 years this May. Just when you think you've seen it all.. you truly haven't. Let...
  2. Want to move to the OR

Hmm... you got screamed at in your face by an orthopedic surgeon and ducked as he threw a rongeur across the OR ? LOL.... I wear my teflon suit under my scrubs just in case.
  3. Want to move to the OR

    Sure... no problem. :)
  4. Want to move to the OR

Not really... was meant to be "tongue in cheek" :)
  5. Want to move to the OR

They look for someone with no expericence whatsover. That way you can conform to the insane way that the operating room works. It's a subculture. If you have so much experience in cardiac and ICU.. you'll never get hired in the OR because you already...
  6. How to become an OR nurse

Apply for the job and hope that you don't get eaten alive. Working in the OR will test your resolve within the first month. Either you can handle it.. or you can't. I've seen soooo many students break down and cry. We have a saying where I work tha...
  7. What exactly does "First Assist" mean?

It means either a surgical tech that's worked there forever that has a certificate that lets them "close" or suture when the surgeon leaves the room. Or it means an RN that's gone to a special school to become a CRNFA. Basically it's a body that stan...
  8. I'd like to learn why 2 different hopsitals that I've worked at don't reimburse for the CNOR certification and why most people don't know and don't care what CNOR means.
  9. How long are O.R. shifts?!

In the OR ? Are you kidding ? If you're lucky you get to go home after 8 hours. This happens maybe one day/week. Most days I work at leat 9-10 hours and if I don't "volunteer" to stay late, I get the big guilt trip from the lead nurse (NAZI) of the...
  10. Advice for OR preceptorship

Read the Bible.... god help you. LOL
  11. new grad to OR

Stick with being an RN. Where I work we have RN's that also scrub in. They get the short end of the stick as they have to do 2 jobs. It works against them some days as they run from one case where they are being an RN.. and have to go right to anothe...
  12. Tell me about CALL

Hmm.. tell you about call... Call SUCKS... throw the dice and see what comes up. I've had nights where I didn't do anything, and I've had nights where I've worked 29 hours straight. Even when you are sitting at home wondering if the pager will beep,...
  13. "blame the nurse" in the OR??

No matter what.. it's always the Circulating RN's fault.
  14. setting up the case

The RN and the ST set up the case and open the supplies. The RN leaves the room to go and get the patient and the ST goes and sits in the break room and drinks a cup of coffee. The ST peeks out tof he break room and when the RN comes down the hallway...
  15. CNOR

Worked at 2 different hospitals in the OR. At both of them, they didn't pay you any more to have CNOR on your name badge and wouldn't reimburse you the money spent to get the letters. At both places the sentiment was "why bother"
