  1. Comparing A Nurses' Salary

My husband hires new grads for his department and they all start out around $65K/yr as Engineers. You would think a nurse would be given at least that! I'm going on 20 yrs as a BSN RN and the most I've made is $60K/yr.
  2. I believe you have no choice but to judge. I listen, watch and react to my patients based on the situation. If I think their behavior is harmful to their self care then I judge. For instance, a smoker with diabetes and a non healing wound. Their A1c...
  3. Not impressed and depressed

You'll make friends in clinicals. Everyone is going to be stressed out during lectures. Instructors are a breed unto their own. Don't base your self worth on their acceptance. I purposefully didn't engage or make myself known to them & did just f...
  4. What shoes are you getting for clinicals?

I live in my Alegra's. Expensive but worth it!
  5. Mercy Ships

Have you received any feedback? I too am considering a tour with them. My biggest concern is safety.
  6. New RN, 3 weeks into orientation, total screw up.

I've been type 1 for over 10 years and I totally agree with veggie530. Hypo events which I've had plenty are very easily fixed. You can't always predict bs reactions I'm frequently off as much as 30% with my estimations (carb counts and insulin/bs #'...
  7. wound care question!

Yes - it's safe. You could also powder with stoma powder after the skin prep. Same effect as a hydrocolloid.
  8. Please help pt with leaking colostomy

I vote for trying an Eakins Seal. As long as you get the base dry first. Try using skin prep then stoma powder then skin prep - Make the base feel like dry sandpaper - then Eakins. It's worth the $$
  9. how to deal with the funky smell?

I had a physician dab tincture of Benzoin under his nostrils. It's strong stuff & sticky - you won't notice the smell after that!
  10. Stubborn pilonoidal cyst

I feel for you. I've had pt's in the same boat. They can last awhile. Silver wound vac foam would work well. I'm a big fan of KCI's vac. I've done many on inpatient pilnoidial cyst's. I've used ostomy paste or strips to build up around the cyst - it ...
  11. Most hospitals have nurse educators (MSN) My department has three with MSN's in education. All the clinical instructors I've interfaced with in my hospital are MSN's. Also I have met several MSN's in education who work for DME and Pharm companies. Pl...
  12. MSN Education Programs bizarre range

what is the deal with msn programs? i have seriously looked at hundreds of nursing schools online. some admission requirements are out of this world. you would think these programs would try to be competitive with each other. why are some programs 3...
  13. confused about insulin

i'm a diabetic who carb counts & shoots - fast acting insulin. so think of it this way: your pt has a pre meal glucose of 115. she's provided 50 carbs to eat. if you dose her before she eats she could bottom out if she doesn't eat. the "old" way:...
  14. Those Darn Diabetics

i normally don't discuss my personal life in public....here it goes. i'm a t1 diabetic. i'm a wound care nurse. i know diabetes well. i also know nurses & physician bias very well. depression is very very very common. being tired & exhausted ...
  15. Has anyone ever heard of a physician writing a criticism towards a nurse in a progress note? Are they not taught this is a legal record in med school? Of course, the doc got away with this immaturity. I keep thinking if this ever went to court..........
