What are the most frequently-occurring pts or diseases/problems you see when working in med-surg? I want to start out there as soon as I graduate, but I would like to be mentally prepared for this, so what do all of you med-surg nurses take care of ALL THE TIME, ON A REGULAR BASIS, and what about those things bothers or scares you (optional)? THANKS!

Congratulations on starting your carreer in med-surg nursing! I work in the ICU now but I did roughly 10 years in med-surge first. These Dx. come to mind...pneumonia,GI bleed, diabetes(either new onset or complications of) bowel obstruction, cellulitis, complications from peripheral vascular disease(ulcers, gangrene) sepsis and chf. As often as you can, speak openly to the admitting MD. to find out what he/she is looking for or discuss what the plan is beyond what you see with the admission orders. Most health care professionals are so busy that we must make an effort to open the discussion for a plan of care. Good luck. Annie
