Surgical Tech - HCV

Hi,

I'm new to this forum. I am considering changing careers and getting into medical field, specifically getting an RN.

My plan is to start off as a Surgical Tech.

But I've been diagnosed with Hep C, (drug use decades ago) which I've been treating for a year now, and I'm aware that there is a problem with this being admittted to a med. program.

Does this automatically preclude my entering the medical field, regardless of program? If it does, is there anyway around it, or for me to meet some standard (viral count??) to be admitted?

Any of you with experience in this area either directly or indirectly I would appreciate your input. Thanks

I'm no expert on this but I doubt having Hep C will prevent you from working. Nurses who are HIV positive are able to work and I've neer heard of them having to maintain a certain viral load level to work. The only time I've ever been asked about my health status was to get a signed form saying I was healthy enough to work and to sign a waiver/request form for the Hep B vaccine. I've never been asked about Hep C.

You would have to maintain strict universal precautions- but as a CST, you'll be doing more than that anyway.

My suggestion would be to talk to a Hep C support group or the Infection Control nurse at a hospital (call one out of your area and give a fake name if you'll feel more comfortable) for input.
