Hi everyone! I am new to allnurses.com and am really excited that I have the opportunity to be on here I am 19 years old and am in the process of applying to nursing school. I was informed last week that I got a job as a PCT in the med/surg unit at a large hospital. I am so EXCITED! This has been my dream since I was a little girl. I hope all goes well on my first day next week. I just wanted to hear what you guys think about the med/surg unit and its pros and cons. Also, what are some good brand scrubs and equipment that I may be needing. Thank you!

Hi and welcome!

Congrats on your new position. It will a good learning experience for you and your upcoming education.

As for pro's and cons they are pretty much the same as any floor. You will have good co workers and bad ones. Your days will be crazy busy and others sane, lol.

You will learn a lot about the bodily systems, so by the time you get to nursing school, it should be easier for you.

As for equipment, a good stethascope, maybe a tiny flashlight if you work nights or early morning when the room is still dark. A good pair of shoes is a must.

Scrubs: That is a personal preference. Go to a uniform store and try them on. I prefer Koi. I like the brushed cotton and they are long enough, lol.

Let us know how your first day goes!

:welcome: and best wishes in your new job and as you begin your journey to becoming a nurse!
