I've made the decision to leave med-surg

Hi All,

I want to thank everyone who has responded to me with advice.

My situation: Pysch nurse right out of school for a year+, then to med-surg 4 months ago. Since I have started this, I have never felt more overwhelmed, anxious, sick to my stomach. I wanted to get a year of experience, but if I don't go soon, I may not stay in nursing.

All of you that are med-surg nurses are my heroes. The co-workers that I have now are great people and certainly don't "eat their young." I wish you all the best.

I probably will go back to finish out my contract in Psych... Now if I can just make it to the 6 month mark (hospital policy)...

I know 4 months seems like forever when your days are stressed out in MS, but it took me more like 10 - 12 months before I quit feeling dread everytime I came to work. Lots of people (much younger than I am) told me that it took them at least 6 months to start feeling more comfortable. Maybe you will start to feel better at the 6 month mark and decide to stay.

Whatever you do, good luck to you. LTC is a worthy calling, too, especially since no one is getting any younger!!!

I think there is a unit that is right for every person, and maybe med-surg is not the right one for you. I don't think psych would be the right unit for me, so I am thankful for nurses like you! The great thing about nursing is that each person can find his/her own place to call home!

Good luck in your career!

Good luck to you and you will make the right decision... I tried being a hospice RN and hated it... I quit before my orientation was done and felt guilty, but I just could feel that it would have not been a good fit for me at all... I learned a lot about death and dying and that is helping me now on my med/surg floor...

Thank you! It's nice to know I'm not alone. Not every part of nursing is for everyone, just hope the interviewers agee! Congrats on finding the specialty for you, and good luck!

You aren't alone. I worked psych, then m/s. I hated m/s for the first 6 months. Then disliked it for the next 6 months. Then tolerated it for the next year. I think I am done. I want psych back.

:-) Nice to know other people made the leap. Gooey, did you do it because you wanted the med experience, or because everyone said you should?

Just curious...

I love med surg but the great thing about nursing is you can keep moving till you find your niche, if psyche is yours, I admire you.

I've had a week on med/surg... but I know I won't be staying! I'm gonna stick it out as long as I can for the experience and to get through my training program.. but I, like you, know that this is not my calling. I will be looking for other avenues. Good for you for trying though

I am sorry to hear that MS was not your calling and you know that is okay. Good Luck in whatever you do next in nursing.
