Hmmm.......well I was in charge and on team with 7 patients. My one patient refused to wear her bipap and spo2 wouldn't come about 75%. Begged her to wear bipap or simple mask to no avial. Finally got order to sedate her so she will wear bipap. Gave haldol, now patient is seeing children and thinks somone is trying to kill her.

Finally got her to wear a simple mask, sats up to 96%. ;)

Other patient calls out a few hours later and says he's been throwing up. Leave to get phenergan. Upon entering the room pt says he just doen't feel good. Start to give phenergan, patient has a seizure, goes into v-fib and seconds later we're coding him. Pt survived and it tubed and sent to the ICU.

If work doesn't call me in a few minutes to let me be on call I think I'll die!!

I am having a real knee jerk reaction to your note. I know you meant well in your heart but I feel you 'led the witness' projecting your own beliefs system on her. In asking her if she knew the Lord, wanted to pray, how to be saved...you automatically assumed she believed as you. What if she had been Jewish, Hindu, athiest?

It is not your place to assume each pt will have a religious belief as you. It would have been more appropriate to ask "What can I do to help you? What would bring you comfort at the time? Are there any special things you might like - ie. prayer, visit to a chaplain, music, etc." and then let her answers guide you.

As a CHPLN, Certified Hospice & Paliative Care Licensed Nurse, I respect each and every one of my pt's beliefs or lack of beliefs. It's all intensely personal, nor more so that at the end of life.

Please learn these differences - and you will become a very compassionate and caring, supportive nurse.

I will not argue or defend what took place in that room. I was there you were not. I do not have to wait to become compassionate, caring or supportive...I already am. There could not have been anything more appropriate I could have done for her at this time in her life.

I am sorry you were offended by my comments. That was not my intention. Please accept my apology -

Merely confused lady is now delirious, hallucinating, and a-gi-ta-ted. Finally the psychiatrist sees her at 4:30! Gallbladder lady is fine, quadriplegic lady hurts, CHF/pneumonia lady didn't fall, little frail man finally got washed up.

And my manager gave me a locker. After I've worked here for 3 years. :roll

I love it!

(okay, that was 52)

Bed 1 little old lady with afib. Coumadin loading. Very nice.

Bed 2, absolutely aggravating woman, had her a couple weeks ago. Knows everything, but asks ten thousand questions and then argues with you about it. "What's that pill? Imdur? No my imdur at home isn't pink. Did he raise it? Thats's not a 30 mg imdur. Go get another one in the pack and let me see it." Then doesn't so much as apologize when sees shes wrong, just goes on another tangent. ALL. DAY. LONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bed 3, another usually nice LOL who's attending comes in, says she's dismissed. She gets dressed, takes off her own monitor and IV, calls her husband, who comes to the desk wanting to know WHY her paperwork isn't ready yet!!!! The doc still has the chart dictating and I haven't even seen it yet!!!!

Bed 4, Little old man from ER with "unsteadiness", called up for admit at about ten o'clock, never did show up. Checked the computer one last time, and he shows up as discharged from the ER. Did he leave AMA? Nice if they'd call me.

Bed 5, poor woman with CABG at another hospital nearby. Came in with chest pain, fluid retention, dx CHF. When gets up, spouts approx 500 cc of slime from CABG incision. Off to the OR!!
