promethazine+lidocaine?

How many of you mix lidocaine with your phenegran for IM injections? I had a physician ask me to do that today....I have never done that before. I didn't have a chance to call the pharmacy, and the davis guide didn't say anything about it being incompatible, but I don't know.

phenergan is a very irritating medication, given in the IV it has to be diluted with at least 10mls of ns pushed very slow. I can't imagine how painful an IM would be. The lidocaine can be added to several meds to decrease pain with administration.

Still, doctors don't often give medications. I wouldn't trust a doctors judgement completely. I would have taken the time to look the medication up or called pharmacy.

Phenergan can be given without dilution into a running IV over a couple of minutes.

Benadryl needs to be diluted in 10cc NS and pushed very slowly. I usually push over 4 to 5 minutes.

Promethazine should ALWAYS be diluted when given in a PIV.
