butterfly

When a patient is receiving meds via sc butterfly like scopolamine and dilaudid. Do you set up 2 butterflies and label each for each med or do you just use 1 butterfly. Seen it done both ways and was curious. Also what is the max amount in Cc's that can be given via sc butterfly or regular sc injection. Thanks

In my experiences we have always used 2 butterflies as some medications are not compatible with one another. I suppose you could flush with saline, but why bother if you put another line in. The other thought is that, if you do not draw up enough medication to compensate for the dead space (which is now filled with the other medication), the resident is technically not receiving the entire alloted amount. The maximum amount you can administer in an adult is 2ml/ subcut.

Excuse my ignorance, but I have never heard of sc butterfly. Would you please explain what it is?
