I have been offered an MDS coordinator position and was wondering how it sounds to those of you who have been there. The facility is about 110 beds with a usual census of 80-90. It has a locked alzhiemers wing, LTC wing and rehab wing. Anywhere from 10-20 active medicare pts at a time. There will be 2 fulltime MDS nurses. The postition is open because one MDS-c took the DON position. The salary is excellant for this area, although it is a 40 mile drive which is new to me. I have a basic knowledge of the MDS process but nothing in detail. Training will be with the other mds nurse, although I'm going to ask about taking some online courses. What do you think?

if it something you are interested in doing and the drive isnt too much then I would say go for it now days it is becoming more difficult for nurses with no MDS experience to get in to the field. So if you have the opportunity, the money is right and you work out all the details like hours and responsiblities and can get the training you feel you need I would go for it.

I took this job back in April and just put in my notice. It was a very good job, workload was heavy but doable, but the hours and drive took its toll on me. Being gone 10+ hours M-F just didn't fit with the family life I want. So its back to LTC for me. Nice family owned 30 bed facility only 5 min. for me. Hope I made the right decision!
