When we have residents who discharge from the facility over the weekend and sometimes they are planned (but I am not able to interview them before they leave) I am coding 1 (yes) for section J "should pain assessment interview be conducted" and n/a for J0300. Is this affecting my Quality Measures? I try to visit them on Friday but is there something else I am missing or should be doing?

  3. Fact: The MDS 3.0 Quality Measures User's Manual calculates QMs for short stay and long stay pain, so not interviewing residents for Section J might affect those quality measures. Refer to the QM Manual to find which MDS items and values are used for inclusion and exclusion. CMS suggests in the RAI Manual that planned discharges should have more data collected than for unplanned discharges because the facility knows the discharge is imminent.

CMS' preference: MDS is team effort via the interdisciplinary team. MDS is not a one-person show. If the MDS Coordinator is not available for discharges, someone else should be trained to interview residents in the MDSC's absence.

If this does not answer your question then please be more specific, possibly providing an example.
