rehab hospital full time or med surg unit per diem?

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Can you take the full time TBI unit position AND the per diem med/surg position? One thing to think about... in my experience, per diem positions still require you to do the week long hospital orientation, then a few shifts of orientation on the unit. I've never been able to get an extra per diem job because I've never had the time for that orientation while working my full time job.

My second thought is about how you mentioned you only asked for 24 hours at the sub acute facility just for benefits because you have another per diem job. Usually (again, in my experience) benefits are less expensive the more hours you work, so you'd be paying less for your benefits if you took the full time hours they are offering and work less at your per diem job.

All that being said, I think the full time TBI unit sounds like the offer from what you've mentioned here.

Thank you April! i have had about 2 weeks to think about all this and i am gearing into the full time TBI unit in the rehab hospital. the only thing about the per diem job is the big name of the hospital and its affiliation to one of the best hospital in the state. its beth israel deaconess hospital which is part of the beth israel medical center in boston massachusetts and it is on a med surg unit. like i mentioned the nurse manager said a 32 hour position will be open in october but she said other employers will go for it too. i dont know if i can do the 40 hours position at the TBI unit and the per diem job at the med surg. the 40 hours pays great and the orientation phase is really good training. i dont know if you have heard of it, braintree rehabilitation hospital at metrowest medical center.

also other factors i have to think about are yes, the benefits and also i am the bread winner in my family, well as of now, my husband is still studying for his boards so basically i pay for everything.

the only reason i am taking the sub acute is just for the benefits so i can go for the per diem med surg position but again no guarantee that i will have a full time position with benefits in 4, 5, or 10 months????

i will probably tell the boss at the per diem job that i will not take the offer right now because i have an offer at a full time rehab hospital. im just so worried of letting go of this oppurtunity at the med surg unit at this hospital because it is so hard nowadays to get into the hospital!

Well, if this makes your decision to turn down the med/surg job any easier... you might never get any hours as a per diem nurse because you won't have guaranteed hours. Per diems are the first to get cancelled. Also, didn't Beth Israel recently have some lay offs? I guess my point is that a per diem job isn't always a stable job.

Good luck with whatever you end up choosing!

What happened to the original post? It somehow disappeared and now it looks like I started this thread. Strange! :lol2:

yup very strange...but thanks april, thats what my husband said too, right now with everything going on that its so hard to find jobs esp in boston/massachusetts, i should take the full time one. im not sure if i mentioned it already but they first offered 24 hours when i interviewed with HR but for my second interview the director of nursing said ill give you a 40 hour position, nights and they have been so nice to me with everything!

I work at Beth Israel and actually they are starting to hire some nurses now. There were lay offs last year but now that the census has gone way up recently, the hospital seems to be doing decently now financially. I think you are better off taking the full time position, only because working per diem isn't always stable. I'm sure whatever decision you will make will be the right one. Good luck!

thank you all! i have reached my decision and i will take the full time one, in times like these you have to get all the hours you can get. how do i let the other one know? i am hoping they wont get mad and i dont burn my bridges with them.
