Really freaking out

U.S.A. Massachusetts

I canNOT find a job. It's now to the point where I can't even get HR to talk to me or nurse managers to return my phone calls. Some HRs wont even let me talk to nurse recruitment. An HR rep from Lahey Clinic asked me what type of nurse I am and I told her new grad and she said not to bother, that neither Lahey campus is hiring new grads and won't be until next year. I have tried every acute hospital within a 2 hour driving distance in MA and several subacute/rehab/SNF facilities and none of them are hiring new grads or don't have the support in place to train a new grad. I really don't know what to do. My dad is deathly ill and my mom cannot pay pay their bills on just her salary. I really need to work and help out. My health insurance is also up. I'm so frustrated and discouraged.

I was thinking of doing that but they are done hiring new grads until Febraury. The HR manager said new grads can only be hired into positions under the new grad program at BMC and their new grad position was for a hem/onc position...just about all those positions were filled internally this year and HR said they have so many techs who are still waiting for positions because there just aren't any openings. So depressing!

Don't worry we will find something :D. Although I am leaving my floor I will ask my NM if she has anything ...can't hurt

Thanks Calypso, I sincerely appreciate it. Where do you work?

BIDMC I was a CNA but now I am a unit secretary since I passed my boards. It is a great floor but I just wanted to leave Boston ....from NY originally and I am just ready to move

I agree with Calypso. Walk onto the floors you are interested in and drop your resume and cover letter off....or even do that to the HR. If you really want to get your foot in the door there, then tell them to waitlist you and still consider you for the new grad program in feb. It will be worth it if you are happy in the long run. Good things come to those who wait!

Thanks, Calypso. I will definitely check them out. I DO need insurance as mine ended at the end of August but at this point......I'll take whatever I can get.

Hey--I can talk to my DON if you want...I know you're interested in peds, but it seems right now that you're just more interested in getting a job in general. Our TCU will be expanding from 22 beds to I believe 40-ish over the next several months, so I know that she is likely looking to hire new nurses. The pay is comparable to hospitals, benefits are good & the staff is great and very welcoming and supportive of new grads. I've seen PICCs, wound vacs, ostomies, JP drains, nephrostomy tubes, you name it, just within the past week, and have already gotten a lot of good med experience. If you're interested in finding out more information, let me know--I hate seeing people struggle because the job search is just so awful, so just let me know if I can do anything to help.

Katie I sincerely appreciate it. Where is your facility?

Hey,

I totally know what you are going through. I was in your same exact situation- complete with applying to every hospital in Massachusetts except for Springfield. I started before graduation in May and passed my boards in June. To make it worse, I worked in a hospital and they wouldn't hire me because they filled their new grad program already and my job as an aide was taken so I had absolutely no hours to work there. So I looked everywhere! I even got a few interviews but in the end they went to internal hires or nurses with experience and not new grads. It is disappointing, frustrating beyond belief and made me want to reconsider my career.

But then I started thinking ok, maybe I don't have to work in a hospital environment. I mean I will eventually, and like you, I want to work in the NICU or L & D. So I started applying to rehab and ltc and one of my instructors recommended Genesis Health care which has many nursing homes and some rehabs in Massachusetts and the country.. They offer IV certification and other trainings. I think if you can get on a rehab unit, you will be fine and stick it out so it is some nursing experience. ANd if you do IVs and wounds, some even have telemetry, then it is comparable to hospital experience. Check out their website anyway and tell the nurse recruiter that you want rehab experience over long term care. They seemed really nice.

There are also Youville, Spaulding, Northeast, New England (who said they arent hiring anymore right now). I also applied to the VA in Bedford which is more LTC but they have great benefits and once you are in you can transfer to any VA in the country, including the acute care hospitals in Jamaica Plain and Brockton.

I hope this helps, I really know how you feel, just try to stay positive, and something will come. I just got a job offer yesterday and another today so now I went from nothing to having to choose... I guess everything does work out in the end ( and if it doesn't, it's not the end!)... Good luck!!!:nurse:
