Really freaking out

U.S.A. Massachusetts

I canNOT find a job. It's now to the point where I can't even get HR to talk to me or nurse managers to return my phone calls. Some HRs wont even let me talk to nurse recruitment. An HR rep from Lahey Clinic asked me what type of nurse I am and I told her new grad and she said not to bother, that neither Lahey campus is hiring new grads and won't be until next year. I have tried every acute hospital within a 2 hour driving distance in MA and several subacute/rehab/SNF facilities and none of them are hiring new grads or don't have the support in place to train a new grad. I really don't know what to do. My dad is deathly ill and my mom cannot pay pay their bills on just her salary. I really need to work and help out. My health insurance is also up. I'm so frustrated and discouraged.

Thanks Andrea. Transplant sounds like an amazing opportunity. It's one of the must work in areas for me at some point in my career. I really want to work in the NICU as my main career, but I know that I also want to experience PICU, transport, transplant, and pedi and adult hem/onc/bmt at some point too. I just saw that Youville Hospital in Cambridge is hiring on every floor, all shifts. They are a post-ICU rehab/LTAC but I believe their shifts are 8 hours only.

I believe this is true to an extent but I also don't know many CNAs/techs who call in sick to go to the beach. I also don't know many that have TIME to gossip and slack off. I'm usually breaking a sweat by 8:30 and spend my shift literally running from room to room to prepare patients for internal and external appointments, get them up according to schedule, assist pt/ot, help with admissions and discharges, and the many other daily tasks of a nursing assistant. I work on a very cohesive unit (which is why there's rarely any turnover) and everyone really helps each other out. I think everyone on this unit is a shining star. I don't think I could do anymore than I have and if I interviewed tomorrow for any position at any hospital I would feel 100% secure with my references and my experiences. I think that speaks for itself.

Hi OB,

I have to admit this is a tough medium to have a conversation without being able to interject a positive tone on the topic.

I think we can all think of a person that we have worked with that didn't pull their share and was a drag to work with. The beach example was an extreme to make a point.

I'm glad you have experienced working in a very cohesive unit where RNs help each other out. With all that we are required to do that is really the best way to function. Unfortunately, I have also seen the opposite and have been in clinicals with no so nice RNs.

Hi Sarah, yes I have. I applied to Parkland, Elliot, Portsmouth Regional, and SNMC. No luck with any of them. I'm really frustrated right now.

HEY you will find the job you are supposed to have. I stressed about the whole job search in boston that I worked for a temp agency during the time of my search. That way I didn't have to worry about money and I could look for the job I wanted on my own terms.

The name of the temp agency is Alternative Soultions and their office is on comm ave in Boston. They do take new grads and all I did was immunizations in clinics for it was in August during the whole back to school time. If this works out you can make some good money for I was getting paid almost $40 an hour and I didn't need to insurance that is why it equaled that. I am not even making that now. I only worked 3 days a week and I could turn down jobs if I didn't want them

Hope this helps I am rooting for you

Well, at Parkland at least, because I know that the Elliot is being a pain right now, are you at least able to talk to the nurse recruiters? Are you actually calling all the places or just doing the online resumes? Don't forget that the squeeky wheel gets the oil. Don't be overly annoying or desperate, but definitely show your sincere interest at working there.

Do you have a really amazing and moving cover letter? Make it something unique and eye catching. Parkland told me that that is what will make them call. Are you trying for a specialized position? Try and volunteer if you can. Accept a per diem or part time position if you can. Then move your way into full time. It's better than nothing and certainly better than working at a LTC facility (which hospitals don't look kindly upon).

You can do this! Be extremely persistant in your search and don't lose your dreams!

Octoberbride, check your email. :)

Hi Sarah. Parkland had ZERO interest in me...they had their own new grads to find positions for. I think I have an honest, unique cover letter that highlights how my tech experiences have molded me into a compassionate, caring nurse. I also give one or two sentences about why I want to work at that particular hospital.

I REALLY want to work in the NICU/PICU but that's not going to happen right now...I gave up on even finding anything with peds...I'm just happy to take whatever I can get.

Thanks, Calypso. I will definitely check them out. I DO need insurance as mine ended at the end of August but at this point......I'll take whatever I can get.

Hey did you try BMC I know they are hiring my clinical instructor called me to see if I had found a job yet .... She told me to look at BMC I looked at their website and they do have pediatric positons available.

Hope it helps! I am looking out for ya

Hi Calypso! BMC was my #1 choice and I'm on a first name basis with the HR rep LOL. I applied for those pedi night positions and the PICU, but you just have to know someone to get in there. I did my clinical rotation on the pedi unit/picu/nicu and absolutely loved it. They have an incredible pediatric program there.
