Hello all,

My name is Mark and I have just made the decision to become a nurse.

I graduated from Boston University with a BA in Psychology in 2006, and I haven't had any luck finding a job in my field with just a bachelor's. I've gradually come to the realization that I don't really want to be a counselor/social worker like I thought I did, and I've decided to channel my interest in health sciences and desire to help people into a nursing career. Luckily I come from a family where nursing is somewhat of a family tradition - my sister, my aunt, and my grandmother are all nurses - so I have had a lot of exposure to the world of nursing.

I just submitted my application for the part-time RN program at Quincy College in Plymouth, starting January 2009, and I'm hoping I'll be able to start then (and not get wait-listed for another year!). Luckily, I did my prereqs at BU (I am a pre-med dropout!), and they just barely made it in under the 5-year mark. I also have already finished English I & II, Psych 101, and the math requirement. I am planning to try and finish some of the other electives (sociology, computer science and US history/government) at Cape Cod Community College between now and the start of the program.

This has all been happening very fast - I'm excited but I'm also a little nervous. I'm glad that there is a forum like this where I can network with other people who have made this career choice, and hopefully pick up some good advice on how to best make this work for me.

So, thanks everyone and I look forward to meeting you all!

~MJE~
