Help! Why can't I find a job?!

Updated Sep 18, 2008 at 08:05 AM by 3sodapop

I'm a new grad LPN with an Associate's Degree in Medical Assisting (10 years experience). I've applied to every nursing home in my area (small town). I've had 2 interviews..the 1st was for 3rd shift; the 2nd was just a 'meet & greet', then a week later they said they didn't have any openings yet(??) I interviewed at a MD office for a part-time benefitted position, but they went with another applicant. Everyone seems to be hiring only LPN's with experience. I'm trying to stay within 1/2 hour drive from Groton, but at this point I'm starting to consider Lowell or Fitchburg. I've sent out or applied at over 20 places, and it's like I don't exist. I don't know if it's my resume, my references, or am I just too picky? I have a 9 year old with after school commitments. It's been almost 2 months since I started looking and I'm running out of ideas.

BTW, I've been paying $1248/mo for COBRA, and it ends Sept. 30th.

HI there,

Try Fallon Clinic.... they have 26 different locations in Massachusetts and can put you into specialties such as OB/GYN, pediatrics, internal med etc. they are always looking for LPN's. I work there as a RN, and it's a great work environment. they have fallon health insurance as well.

Thanks for the idea! The closest Fallon office is in Leominster. Unfortunately it is 38 minutes/27 miles away from home. It's just a little too far IMO.

I REALLY appreciate the suggestion.

I think you are limiting your self, an hour commute in the Boston area tends to be the norm. Good luck job hunting.

I commute to my job in Boston from Hyannis, and I commute in with the same people everyday. It's not a permanent situation but I've been doing it for almost a year. That is much worse than 38 minutes, but you will be surprised how eventually it just becomes part of your routine and you kind of get used to it. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and deal with a commute for a while. I say go for it!!

You are right!
I am limiting myself.
But, I LIVE IN THE STICKS.

My husband commuted from Groton to Reading for years. He left the house at 6am; got home at 6:30pm. Snow..rain...not my idea of fun. I don't think he got used to it because he couldn't do it anymore. Luckily he bought a business in Westford. He's so happy now his commute is only 10 minutes.

It's a quality of life issue to me. Do you realize how much time some people spend of life sitting in traffic for 2 hours each day? That's days, weeks, months that they'll never get back! It's good if you have company, but I wouldn't. My time here is too precious to me. I'd rather wait and take a job nearby that pays way less. I AM limiting myself, though. You are so right.

I guess I'll just slowly start widening my circle of applications until I find something that works. Thanks so much for your input. I can see what's going on now. There are so many places I KNOW will hire me that I haven't tried because I'm too picky. I still feel like I should wait until a job nearby opens up, but I'll try the VA Hospital in Bedford and some NH's in Lowell. In fact, I think I'll start another thread on that.

I appreciate the support and wish you luck in your endeavors. Thank-you again, I really needed another perspective.

Nan

Have you ever considered getting reciprocity in NH? I used to live in Pepperell and several of my friends parents worked in NH. I know St. Joseph's in Nashua is hiring. Not a bad commute and worth a shot

Yup, it is. I applied there and interviewed for a MD office job, but I didn't get it. I'll wait to see if I'm hired in NH first cuz it's pretty complicated and expensive and you have to go to Concord to apply for a temporary license while they process it.

I'll keep checking in with St. Joseph's. Thanks!
