I know this question gets asked a lot but if anybody has any thoughts to share I'd appreciate it. I have worked at a large Univ medical center in Baltimore for a year to get my med-surg experience but now I am looking for something different.

I want to try ICU, specifically trauma/neuro. Are there any hospitals out there that really take the time to train their nurses? Units with appropriate staffing/acuity ratios? Or am I just dreaming?

Feel free to privately message me if that works for you. I would really like to get into specifics; due to past experiences I just don't want to get myself into another crazy situation! (What do you mean there's no hospital transportation? No IV/Lab team?)

Thanks!! :yeah:

i am getting ready to start at Anne arundle med center in the ER they have a great internship type training that I am in "training" taking classes etc for almost a year. They do the same in ICU etc

Washington Hospital center is a large level 1 trauma/teaching hospital. Has a transport team, IV team and a Lab team. Although in the ICU you are expected to at least try and get the IV's first before calling them. There is no dedicated trauma/neuro ICU. All the ICU's take neuro pts and trauma pt's. It' DC so you get plenty of shootings, stabbings, MVA's, and pt's hit on the head with blunt instruments.

WHC has a fellowship for all areas of the hospital including ICU.

Hello:

As another poster stated, AAMC has a very good reputation. I have heard that their ICU is fabulous, with great training. In my travels I met a nurse that worked @ University of MD/Shock trauma. She worked in the multi-trauma unit. She said that she had been all over the place. Worked at many hospitals, and nothing compared. The unit was called Shock trauma/multi trauma. Good luck to you!!!! Have you thought about Burn ICU. From what I have read on the burn nursing forum, this specialty is amazing. Hard work, but awesome. Hope you find what you are looking for.... TAKE Care.
