If you don't mind me asking how were your teas and gpa? I'm planning to apply for spring 2012. How many classes did you

Have left at time of application?

And for anyone who already got accepted, what were your stats?

I am in the process of applying to UMB for the Spring 2012 semester as well. I just registered for the TEAS V and bought the study guide. Yikes! I haven't had general BIO for almost 20 years (I'm a career changer) so I certainly need the help on some of that stuff. My original undergraduate GPA was around 3.77 and my prerequisite GPA is 4.0. I have 3 courses left to take this Fall- Micro, Nutrition, and Developmental Psych. Other than the TEAS my application is about finished.

Is the "Human Growth and Development" pre-req the same as Developmental Psych? I'm hoping so...

I'm currently at AACC and getting frustrated with their changing admissions policies (which have now become non-competitive other than who can run to the office and submit their application first) so I'm looking in to other options. At UMSON, I'd finish my schooling in the same amount of time as I would if I stayed at AACC, but I'd have a BSN instead of ADN (I have previous credits from University of Delaware that I could transfer). I just have Stat and Nutrition that I need to take (and I think a humanities class)- which I just registered for at AACC for the fall.

Anyone know how GPA is calculated? Is it only on the courses that you transfer over? My grades at UD are horrific (that was 10 years ago when I was a young, immature, lost child with no career goals) :eek:, but I'm holding strong with a 4.0 at AACC now that I have a focus. If I only transfer in the pre-reqs, my GPA is above the required 3.0...but if they transfer over all of my credits from UD, I'm in bad shape.

I'm going to go in and speak with an advisor soon- the application deadline is quickly approaching and I'd like to apply for the Spring 2012 class if at all possible.

I attended AACC from 8/09-05/11 in order to complete my prerequisites for nursing school and was thinking of applying to AACC's nursing program, but for the same reason you cited, applied to UM and was accepted for Spring 2011, but deferred until August 2011. I will try to answer your questions in order:

(1) Yes...Developmental Psychology is the same as Human Growth and Development.

(2) From what I was told by an admissions counselor, the GPA is calculated on prerequisite courses only; UM places emphasis on the cumulative science GPA for obvious reasons; since a portion of your prerequisites were taken some time ago at UD, they will place the most emphasis on your more recent grades (I believe the last 40-60 hours or so...I could be mistaken). The thing about UM is that they evaluate the total package: transcripts, both academic and personal recommendations, resume and personal goals statement.

I know that the nursing program at AACC ranks students strictly by their cumulative prerequisite GPA with the top 80-90 students extended offers of admission. Does AACC require a TEAS test? I know they plan to make that a requirement in the very near future. UM will require one if you decide to apply and you need a minimum adjusted score of like 70 I believe. FYI...you can take that test in the testing center at AACC and since you are a student you will not have to pay the testing fee; however, you will have to pay to have your TEAS scores sent to both UM and AACC.

If you are interested in attending UM you should send a copy of your transcripts (from all institutions, except high school) to their admissions office to be evaluated. They will let you know if (1) your courses will transfer; and (2) you are competitive or not. I think it only takes 7-10 days for them to examine the transcripts. I know individuals who had excessively high GPAs that didn't get an offer, while others with much lower GPAs get offers, so there are no hard cut-offs.

I would also recommend attending one of UM's Open Houses, which would be a great source of information. Go to UMSON's website to look at the scheduled times and dates. It is a great program with great, new facilities with a lot going on. I thought their facilities were nicer than Hopkins when I went to tour their facilities.

Also, bear in mind that AACC's nursing program has a stellar reputation and from the unsubstantiated rumors that I have heard their students get more clinical hours than the UM students. I know quite a few very capable and impressive individuals who could have gone wherever they wanted to go for nursing school, yet chose AACC. So it is not a huge step down if you apply and get accepted into AACC's ADN program. I think the BSN gives you a pathway into management and it seems like a lot of hospitals are requiring BSN-trained nurses to gain Magnet status...whatever that means.

AACC now requires that we take the TEAS V. And they don't offer it in the testing center- we have to go to an old PSI testing center and pay for it- to the tune of $110. Yay. I'm scheduled to take mine on Wednesday- and since I just finished up a summer semester complete with an accelerated 6 week A&P 2 course, I haven't had much time to study. I'm just going to cross my fingers and hope for the best! (although I'm going to pick up a "Chemistry for Dummies" book tonight because it's been 10+ years since I've had a Chem course and I need a lil brushing up on it).

I also, luckily, noticed that my Chem credits need to be less than 10 years old for UMB- so I'm signed up for a Chem class at AACC for the fall. But since I had my Chem 1 credits transferred from U of Delaware, they won't let me retake Chem 1 @ AACC, so I gotta take Chem 2. Happy, happy. Joy, joy. Looks like that Chemistry for Dummies book will come in handy for more than one reason. I still have a fairly decent grasp on types of bonds, chemical equations, valence electrons, etc- but I could use a little bit of a refresher.

Hopefully next week I'll have the time to go in and speak with someone at UMB to get a better idea of what I need to do (and I know it'll all be done last minute!). I already had my UD transcript sent there and my AACC transcript should be sent over in the next day or so once summer grades are posted.

Are you sure they don't offer it in the testing center? That is where I took mine and the first time I approached them they told me I couldn't...I would just be 100% sure because it is a pain in the butt to go to a testing center and much more expensive.

You should just google "sample TEAS test" and go through some of the test questions...that is what I did and I scored well on the assessment. You need to brush-up on conversions from decimals-to-percentages and vice versa; algebraic word problems and metric unit conversions. The science portion is a hodgepodge dealing with biology, anatomy, physiology and chemistry. My questions were skewed more towards chemistry and physical science.

Why are you taking Chem 2 if your Chem 1 credits transferred? UMD (and AACC) only require one chemistry credit. Who do you have for Chem 2? I took the class at AACC during the Fall 2010 term and it is a demanding class. You need to brush up on net ionic equations, redox reactions, thermochemistry and acid/base chemistry. Also, know your polyatomic ions and charges. Brush up on your math skills as well; be comfortable with applying the quadratic formula (program it in your calculator if you can) and utilizing logarithms. The math component of the class is what gives most students problems. You will be required to keep a lab notebook, so take good notes as you will have two lab quizzes (both open notebook). Do you have Dr. Tracey for lecture? She is a great teacher, but demanding, and her exams are tough. Hopefully, you have Dr. Sherer for lab. She explains things well and is a lenient grader, which is a good thing for Che 112 lab. If you have Dr. Miller for lab...well, my apologies. She is very tough.

If you can switch I would recommend that you take Che 113. It is an introduction to organic and biochemistry. It requires more work than Che 1, but much less than Che 2 and it is appropriate for nursing students. I took it and enjoyed it. I think one can draw more parallels with Che 113 than Che 2 as most of the mechanism of actions of drugs are organic in nature.

Edit: oops...saw where your chem credit was +10 years old. But my recommendation still stands, register for Che 113 vs. Che 112.

Thanks for the advice on Che 113- I just checked and it's only offered Mon & Wed early evening lectures- a time that doesn't work for me. I have Sherer for lecture and Sivalingham for lab. I looked up Sherer on ratemyprofessor.com and someone commented that she could teach Chemistry to a 3 year old because she makes it so simple. I'm not too concerned on the difficulty of it. I took AP Chem in high school (ages ago!) and 8 credits worth at UD. I enjoyed the material back then and understood it- just need some refreshers (I just wish that AACC would let me take Chem 1!).

And in response to the TEAS thing- now that they've changed the admissions process, I guess they're implementing a different way of administering the TEAS. Effective beginning with the incoming Spring 2012 class, we're required to register for TEAS V through atitesting.com. There are a lot of changes going on with AACC's nursing program that I'm not quite fond of. I'm not sure of their reasoning behind their decisions- it's first come, first served now. So even if I have an amazing TEAS score and an out of this world GPA, if I'm #89 on the list- I get waitlisted behind people who potentially have lower scores than me. I have a feeling the AACC nursing program is going to being to lose some of it's prestige in the coming years. Now if I don't get in to any BSN programs and am accepted to AACC, I won't have any qualms about sticking with AACC. But since it's going to take me just as long to get my BSN as it would my ADN, might as well go for the BSN if I can!

3.7 GPA with an "advanced" TEAS V here. I used da TEAS V secrets book by mometrix and the TEAS official guide. Study, make flash cards, take all the practice tests you can!
