Hi all soon to be fellow classmates! I just wanted to start this thread up so we didn't have to go weaving through all of the older stuff on the old threads.

I am really excited about starting school come January, really nervous though too. I have a lot to get done between now and then and sometimes I just don't think there is enough time in the day. Oh well, I plan on enjoying the holidays and working my buns off to save some money so that isn't an additional stressor during the first semester.

So lets post our questions, our thoughts and hopefully just get to know one another! And again....CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

thanks!!!

as for books im not buying pathoparm. i was told we just need the slides. so hopefully that will save me a ton

Well for books, I have a friend who works at the Baltimore Campus Bookstore so he walked me through it. I showed him the list of classes and he just told me what first year students buy and what they come back in the middle of the semester (panicking) to buy because they need the extra book etc. I probably bought too much and paid too much. You have until one week after classes to return them. So I figured I would get them and then look around and if I find a better deal or start classes and the Prof says definitely don't buy "X" book etc I can return them. I tend to not play around with school stuff. I will over buy if it will help me get through the class. My wife went to Hopkins so I think about their tuition and thank the stars for getting into UMSON.

I saw a link for this on one of the Facebook pages for Shady Grove for CPR.

I need to get my immunization stuff rolling. It sounds pretty involved with multiple visits etc. Has anyone gone to the campus Health Center yet? What did it cost etc? I think I need the works because my records for this stuff are long gone.

I know Baltimore pretty well so if you have questions about the city ask away. The city is trying to get their public transportation up to speed. Hopefully in 5-10 years it will be, however I would be very nervous about making it to class or a clinical using only the bus or lightrail. Depending how far you will be living from Campus get a bike or car or live close enough to walk.

Of course I got into Shady Grove so I will need info about rockville/silver spring.

i'm going to the baltimore campus, but i don't know anything about shady grove, either

i'm young- 20.... so Baltimore should be interesting.....

haha i'm baltimore too... shady grove is 40 minutes more.... i hope i made the right choice in baltimore campus

i'm 21 so i wonder if the baltimore campus tends to be younger than the shady grove campus?; i'm happy over the bigger class size though :loveya: by the way if we are December grads, I understand our diplomas will say 2011 but when will we graduate? or do we just have to wait for the big ceremony in 2012? kinda confused as to how that works

i'm 21 too! this should be fun  for Baltimore

Tubing can be any color.

save your money and get some not so expensive good stethoscope

It is better to leave close to school if you can afford it.

@ RosesArePink. it depends where you will be commuting from.

wow! you guys are all set...books, stethoscopes, scrubs. that's good. i wish i could do the same already but i don't even have a place yet to stay. i don't think i'll have time to visit baltimore before i actually make my move, so i'll apply at lafayette for now.

lunaaedon: what is your impression so far of the places you visited? did you get a chance to visit lafayette. is there anyone here who have lived or currently staying at lafayette? it's going to cost me an arm and a leg but i have no choice i feel at this point.

thethumbs: what areas specifically should be avoided in baltimore? and where are good places you recommend to go to (coffee, restaurants, bookstores etc.) in times we need to take a break from studying?

i'm a lot older than you guys (ancient...;)) but i hope i can join your study groups and i'm looking forward to working with you through these coming two years. my pre-req classes here in san francisco bay area are comprised of people from the very young to the "young at heart" (haha) but we all blended in together and respected each other. i look forward to the same experience from umb.

for those in the waiting list, i would get everything ready...expecting that the offer has been made already. it will come.

gotta get back to studying...finals around the corner. hope you guys are having a great week-end!

for the Stethoscope Classic II SE- do we have to get Black tubing or can we get burgundy tubing?

i was looking at a littmann stethoscope classic ii se in burgundy with a personalized name on the tubing for $65.99 that's online instead of the $94 at the bookstore- the bookstore also carries all colors... but I don't know the rules of UMB SON and it doesn't get specific in the packet

hope all is well

hurricanebells- i have no idea if those shoes will work, sorry- i'll be checking to see if they do because they have them at my local macy's

Doesnt matter. Just make sure it has both diaphragm/bell function. No need buying some fancy cardiac steth or anything. I have the classic II just fyi.

thanks!!!

Eh...i don't know about all that. I actually found the Lehne book to be very helpful. The slides will give you the bare bones of what you need to know "for test purposes." But exams are not just spitting back facts. It involves critical thinking based on knowledge of HOW the drugs work, the different disease processes, etc. These things are really better explained in the book and you can really get a better understanding through reading it. I also plan on keeping Lehne - it is an awesome text.

Best places to live in Baltimore? This is a tough one. I don't want to discourage anyone. I love this city so much and I have been everywhere in the US(I was in a touring band for years) so I think I can accurately compare. But it is a city and along with all the good stuff, it has bad stuff. That being said the UMSON is right downtown. It is right next to Martin Luther King Blvd which is a main artery coming into and out of the city. It also separates downtown from the West side. Finding affordable housing is like anything I imagine where you will be paying more for convenience and maybe safety. It depends what type of person you are. YOu will have plenty on your plate without having to worry about the neighborhood, crazy neighbors, getting mugged etc.

Downtown has gone through a major renovation with UMSON leading the way. The Hospitals in the city are always buying up local property and spreading out.

I think you mentioned living in the Bay Area. Well Baltimore has areas like the Mission mixed in with more heavy business areas. There are also tons of buildings waiting to be renovated but still boarded up. You just have respect the area and be careful.

I think of Baltimore as very North South. Downtown really consists of maybe 10 big city blocks with MLK blvd on the West side and 83 on the East side. If you go North eventually you will cross campuses of lots of different colleges. All colleges need affordable housing so there are tons of apartments all along this route. Lots of coffee shops, places to eat etc.

It has been a while since I was renting or living in these areas but they tend to be safer and most likely more expensive.

The obvious places that come to mind where students tend to live in the city would be Mount Vernon(10-20min walk), Charles Village (35min walk), Canton (45min walk), Federal Hill (30min walk), Hampden(45 min walk).

In my mind less safe but reasonable. Ridgley's Delight is super close(2 min walk), Pigtown pretty close (10min walk), Union Square (15 min walk).

If I was going to live downtown to go to UMSON I would be looking in Mt. Vernon(it is more lower middle in the north south placement I was talking about). It isn't too far away. There are tons of restaurants things to do etc.Thai ,Sushi, Ethiopian, Indian,Pizza, chain fast food etc.

I know there are tons of new apartments right near campus. Lots of lofts. They seem like dorms though to me. You will have to walk to eat or do anything. And the place empties out at night. There is the inner harbor(super touristy 10$ soup etc), Lexington Market( great diverse place with every kind of food but more for lunch, 300+ different stalls of vendors), the orioles various sports bars/restaurants scattered around there.

Also I would definitely try to find current UMSON students who live nearby campus. They could really shed light on how safe it would be to walk from the library at 11pm. That is my biggest worry for everyone. I own and have lived in West Baltimore about a mile west of campus and I still don't take any chances. There is a huge police presence near campus but once the further away you get you need to be safe so weigh that in your decision on where to rent obviously.

I know someone asked about needing a car. I would say you should have one for your clinicals just in case. But if you live near campus the parking will be horrible. Make sure it isn't a nice car. A bike would be ideal. But I have never done it and don't know how easy it would be to navigate rush hour traffic with 50lbs of books on a old bike(too nice a bike will get components stolen).

If you want to live outside the city there are tons of places. But that is another response.

Hope this helps.
