Hi Chaudo, the school requires a US degree from an accredited institution. That would be a U.S high school diploma or an associates degree. If you will graduate at the end of the semester, ask your school to send a notice on your behalf to UMSON saying that you will graduate at the end of the semester. That acts as a waiver.

BUT IF YOU WILL NOT EARN AN ASSOCIATE DEGREE BEFORE THE APPLICATION DEADLINE OR BEFORE THE SEMESTER ENDS, HURRRY! REGISTER FOR TOEFL OR THE EQUIVALENT EXAM LISTED ON THE UMSON WEBSITE. It takes about a month before toefl results are released, so if you plan on taking toefl please do it on time.

This is my 4th year in the United states as well. I applied for fall 2012, but my application got cancelled because it was incomplete. That was because I wasn't on track to graduate at that time and I did not do toefl as well. All praises and thanks to God, by His mercy I was able to graduate Summer 2012, I applied again for Spring 2013 and I got in!!!!!!!

The best thing to do, in my opinion is to email the school at "admissions@son.umaryland.edu" and explain your personal situation to them and ask for clarifications. I got better answers when I emailed than I did when I called the admissions office.

    Hello SlaveOfdMostMerciful,
The equivalent exam listed on their website which you talked about is the TEAS, right? Actually, I prefer the Teas rather than Toefl ^^

No, it is the IELTS. Everyone must take the Teas Exam regardless of circumstances. I strongly advice you to get in touch with the school as soon as possible. That way, you'll get a more comprehensive explanation and a plan of action. Don't stress about it though!

    Good afternoon, everyone ^3^
    Thanks SlaveOfdMostMerciful for your advice!!!
I've just send an email to the school yesterday, telling them that "I really want to get in the BSN program in Spring 2014, but I'm afraid I would get 2 Cs at the end of this semester. If I get high TEAS score, manage to earn all As in the science courses and participate in the volunteer activities, will my chance to be accepted being higher, OR I definitely have to retake those 2 classes?".
    And then they reply:
Thank you for your interest in the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON).

We calculate 3 separate GPAs. Your science GPA, prerequisite GPA, and your overall GPA. The admissions committee reviews the entire application and does a comprehensive review. Their decision is not based solely on grades. If you receive As in your sciences, that is a good indicator that you could be successful in the nursing program. With your other experience, you should be competitive in the applicant pool even with your C grades.

    Thank you,

Guys, I'm moved to tears....But does she really mean that I still have chance? Or she just said that to be polite?
Is there any of you that get accepted with Cs (not from the 4 major science classes)?
And do you know anywhere I could apply for the volunteer program? Do you have to wait in a long time? Do they require health documents?

I was accepted into the program, my GPA was not stellar, my TEAS were excellent and I have a lot of volunteer experience. You always have a chance! Good luck!

Congrats to everyone who got in for Spring 2013! I'm in the Spring 2012 cohort. I'll start off first by telling everyone to remain calm. It's not as bad as everyone says nursing school is. I've managed to maintain a decent GPA while working 32 hours a week, keeping 2 kids alive, and 1 husband relatively happy. You can do it, too!

I have a question. My friend was rejected for Spring 2013 admissions and she was not given a reason as to why this had happened when she called in and asked. Is there a way to have the application reviewed over again? As I recall, she mentioned she had a pretty average-good GPA (although her science GPA might have been a bit low due to previous science courses NOT related to nursing prerequisites). Her prereq grades were also great. She did an absolutely AMAZING job in the TEAS and so I am confused as to why she may have been rejected.

Is there a way for the application to be reviewed over again or is there someone that she can contact to get a reason as to why she was rejected?

    Thanks.

Assuming she met all the minimum requirements, no one can tell your friend exactly why she did not make it. In the end, it's not any one thing, it's the competition. For this admission cycle, there were so many applicants whose applications were better in some way (maybe even a very small way) that the seats were filled before they got to her. For the next admission cycle, the applicant pool is brand new and so it is a whole new ball game. The science GPA is calculated by averaging grades in the four required sciences, Micro, Chemistry, A & P 1, A & P 2. Since applications are all reviewed together as a group, there is no way to review a single application by itself.

Tell your friend she should re-write her essay, get some healthcare experience, and re-take any of the required sciences she got a C in and get an A, re-apply, but have a plan B. And most of all, if she truly wants nursing, to never give up. There are multiple ways to reach this goal. Best of luck to her.
